Col des Roches was the first col with a real nameplate on top that I ever climbed....we are now talking about July 1990 (yes, I am that old). I was on my first cycling holiday alone and dropped by the bike bus in Dôle from where I headed into the Jura.... Still too young and poor for lightweight camping equipment, I arrived at the top on an old Batavus weighing about 20 kilos where Swiss customs stopped me with the legendary question "Do you smoke? " to which I replied, still young and not very bright "as if I could then cycle all the way up here with all that luggage". As a result, I stood there for another hour as they began to examine all my camping gear in minute detail.

Incidentally, it was a busy road up even then. A few years ago I passed it by car....and it is still a busy road uphill.
