I would not be surprised if it is in the Tour de France in the very near future, as they have already finished there several times in the Dauphine. As recently as 2022, Vinjegaard won here ahead of Roglic. It is a beautiful and challenging climb. The latest hot spot?
The 2026 Tour d’Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the 2026 Tour de France, and the 2027 World Cycling Championships! The Tour has already visited here in 2021, but this will be the first time that Solaison hosts a stage finish and a stage victory that will be decided on this plateau.
A road that’s been completely resurfaced for these events.
This cliff-side road is, first and foremost, intrinsically magnificent. But now it’s like a freshly waxed billiard table – even the mosquitoes would slip on it.
A real treat! And the descent is absolutely mad!
The bends and turns are incredibly varied.
The rocks are imposing and the views are often spectacular.
Are we really going to get into the gradients?
This pass is tough and demanding. The first section is gruelling and difficult but fairly steady. You eventually find your rhythm. After Brison, you’re tossed between gradients of 8 and 11 per cent, with some sections even steeper.

At the top, there’s no exceptional reward: the scenery is pleasant but not magical.
There’s even a football pitch… A football pitch on a mountain pass? It’s not a pass, it’s a plateau, a proper plateau. But not as boring as the Langres plateau…
The atmosphere is very pleasant. Blueberry tart, Savoyard fondue and a Reblochon casserole round off the potato galettes.

Lots of cyclists. From all over.
If, like me, you’ve had a right old slog, do what I did: settle down in a pretty spot with a steep gradient and wait for the other cyclists. Everyone seems to be struggling on this pass.
It lifts your spirits…

In short: it’s a tough climb, a really tough one. The road is absolutely stunning. As I was climbing, I’d built it up too much in my mind, expecting a finish against a spectacular backdrop, but it’s just beautiful…

A must-do! Without a doubt.
Have a blast on the descent. But not into a rock. Watch out: it really does tempt you to ride fast.
Oh yes: Seixas mania has taken the area by storm! Here, people declare their love for Paul at every bend. Impressive!

Impressionnant !

Left Villaz on a misty morning to tackle Col de Solaison through Thuet and as you start the climb and gradually move down through the cogs of the cassette and settle down to the relentless 10%+ gradient of the first 10 kilometres keeping your cadence as fluid as possible viewing the stunning scenery and the drop to the valley below. Finally you have a little respite as the gradient decreases for a few kilometres before reminding you that the Solaison is a climb of substance with another kick up in gradient before leveling out at the top and then you can relax with the knowledge and satisfaction of your real achievement in tackling this great climb. I would recommend if you are a senior like myself to have at least a 32T cassette with your compact to ease the strain of those relentless gradients.

The first part between Thuet and Brizon is steep and steady. The second part (after Brizon) is less regular and more of a challenge. Once you reach the top, it's time to order the potato fritters!

Little traffic, not too difficult and what a view from the top!

Everyone summed it up well - beautiful views, not a lot of cars, and steep mostly consistent climbing on nice roads. It’s a winner.

Nice climb, stunning views, road in good condition with some part recently resurfaced. Some parts are narrow (1 lane traffic), be aware of incoming traffic in these places

Well known to local cyclists and final of the last stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré 2017, the climb to the Solaison plateau via Thuet is a very steep climb as the gradient over 11kms is over 9 %
So it is better to arrive at the foot after a good warm up.
From the start the road rises sharply and moments of respite will be rare, a passage before the village of Brizon allows you to catch your breath before the 2nd part which is more irregular with passages at more than 10 % including one at 15 %
Many areas in the shade ( in the morning) , I did not see any drinking water point.
The finish is on the huge plateau of Solaison, the start of many hiking trails and where you can taste the local specialty at the restaurant La Bruyère : the famous potato fritters.
For information: The cycling signs are present at each kilometer
