The famous Cians gorges! This is the rather sumptuous setting in which this ascent gently winds its way.
It's awe-inspiring, and you won't regret being here in the middle of all these red rocks and lots of cute little tunnels.
The road is very good but rather busy. It never climbs very steeply.
After Beuil, the landscape is more ordinary and the road to Valberg is still quite long (around ten km).
As much as I loved the first two thirds of this climb, the end seemed a little bland.
Valberg, a ski resort that is also active in summer, has plenty of restaurants and, as this climb is very long, it whets the appetite.
Well worth doing. 5 stars for the brick-coloured gorges and the river that shyly accompanies us.

One of the longest passes I have climbed. The landscape is magnificent, especially because of its originality and the diversity of its fauna and flora.

The climb through the Gorges de Cians is breathtakingly beautiful. The gorge gives you a continuous view on the fast flowing water in a very red tinted rock area. One part is even more beautiful than the other.
Don't be mistaken about this climb. The beginning is easy, but the middle part is really tough for about 4 km. After those kilometres the steepness only decreases slowly. This feeling is reinforced by the fact that the temperature in the gorge is extremely high and that there are almost no shady spots. There is no water in the gorge. I was lucky to run into a small waterfall where I took a cold shower and filled my water bottles. It is also advisable to bring a small bicycle light because of the tunnels on the route.
