I came across this Col because it is described in the Altigraph - Profils des Cols des Pyrenees Volume 2 Pyrenees Est. Always recommended anyway as a source of climbs the Altigraph series of books. But the Col de Portus stood out because the last 10 km of the profile was marked in red and black only; so difficult! It also says it averages 9.5% over the last 10 km. What it does not mention is that the road can hardly be called asphalted in these last 10 km. Yes, you can see that the road used to be this, but almost every trace of asphalt has decayed. Fortunately, I knew this beforehand and had gravel tyres fitted to my bike. And that was necessary, especially for the descent. The poor road surface makes it feel even heavier on average 9.5% and on stretches 11-12%. You can see it in the speeds on strava on this climb, which are low. There are few turns in the climb, it undulates a bit along the mountainside, but the scenery is beautiful. Very open, though, so watch out on hot days. The top of the col itself is not very special, a sort of crossroads on a mountain meadow. However, you can even take a gravel path that takes you 150m higher. But even that ends a bit oddly in a kind of meadow.
