Beautiful climb from Lake Annecy into the mountains. Done during l'Etape du Tour Annecu - Le grand Bornand. Outing on the col.

Combined with Plan Bois or other nearby climbs, it's a fairly busy climb for both cars and cyclists! Great views of the Aravis massif and a little coffee at the top to cheer you up!

superb view of the entire ascent, made one June 2024, works at the summit which clearly spoils the view, make the descent by the other side it is rather easy and the landscapes are crazy

A rather difficult pass with an irregular first part with alternating high percentages and small moments of recovery until Manigod, then follow 3km very steep of which 2 at more than 9％ of average, will remain then 4km a little less sustained unless you gave everything before.
Not much shade on this climb and quite a lot of traffic in summer, but still less crowded than the neighbouring Aravis.
The landscapes are beautiful and different from the Aravis pass.
Un col assez difficile avec une première partie irrégulière avec alternance de forts pourcentages et petits moments de récupération jusqu'à Manigod, ensuite suivent 3km très pentus dont 2 à plus de 9％ de moyenne, restera ensuite 4km un peu moins soutenus sauf si vous avez tout donné avant.
Pas beaucoup d'ombre lors de cette montée et pas mal de circulation en période estivale, mais quand même moins fréquentée que les Aravis le voisin.
Les paysages sont beaux et différents du col des Aravis.

I wouldn't say that this pass is unmissable; the climb, although benefiting from an impressive view on the surrounding summits, is through quite a few villages and hamlets (Manigod looks very nice though), and the pass itself is a kind of crossroads, which implies a lot of traffic from the foot to the top (Thônes, Faï¿œn, etc.);), and the pass itself is a kind of crossroads, which implies a lot of traffic from the foot to the summit (Thônes, Faverges on one side, La Clusaz, St-Jean-de-Sixt and La Giettaz on the other).
However, the climb remains a very good experience for climbers of all levels: the asphalt is good all the way to the top, and the slope is irregular but never abrupt (which makes the 10/11％ portions tricky, be careful with your effort!)
I recommend to include this climb in a loop of more than 50km, in order to be able to go and find other very beautiful passes in the same day: the nearby region is full of them!

Je ne dirais pas que ce col est immanquable ; la montée, bien que bénéficiant d'une vue impressionnante sur les sommets alentour, se fait à travers pas mal de villages et hameaux (Manigod a tout de même l'air très sympathique), et le col lui-même est un genre de carrefour, ce qui implique une circulation important du pied jusqu'au sommet (Thônes, Faverges d'un côté, la Clusaz, St-Jean-de-Sixt et la Giettaz de l'autre).
Cependant, l'ascension reste une très bonne expérience pour grimpeurs de tout niveau : l'asphalte rend bien jusqu'en haut, et la pente est irrégulière mais jamais brusque (ce qui rend les portions à 10/11％ piégeuses, soyez vigilant envers votre effort !).
Je recommande d'implanter cette ascension dans une boucle de plus de 50km, afin de pouvoir aller chercher d'autres très beaux cols dans la même journée : la région proximale en regorge !
Beautiful col in a beautiful part of France. I drove it from Thones. Nice of the Croix Fry is that it is a kind of crossing of multiple routes and col's. From here you can still drive to different directions.

Many of these cols you can also cycle from Lac Annecy where I was at the time on the campsite. But also from the area of Thones and Cluses and Ugine. It is a large area with many col's and also for the rest of the family enough to do.
Mooie col in een prachtig deel van Frankrijk. Ik heb hem vanaf Thones gereden. Leuk van de Croix Fry is dat het een soort Kruising is van meerdere routes en col's. Vanaf hier kun je dus nog even doorrijden naar diverse windstreken.

Veel van deze cols kun je ook fietsen vanaf Lac Annecy alwaar ik indertijd op de camping zat. Maar ook vanuit de omgeving van Thones en Cluses en Ugine. Het is een groot gebied met veel col's en ook voor de rest van het gezin genoeg te doen.
Lovely climb; a climb with a lot of variety. Cycled several times. Nice to do this famous climb that the big boys in the tours also do. Yesterday the Criterium Dauphiné fought on this climb.
The views are quite nice but not as spectacular as the Col de la Colombiere and the climb from Flumet to the Col des Aravis. But a real winner.
Heerlijke beklimming; een klim met veel afwisseling. Verschillende malen gefietst. Leuk om deze beroemde beklimming te doen die de grote jongens in de tours ook doen. Gisteren heeft het Criterium Dauphiné hier zich op verbeten.
Uitzichten best heel fraai maar niet zo spectaculair als de col de la Colombiere en de beklimming vanuit Flumet naar de col des Aravis. Wel een echte aanrader.
Climb done on July 24, high season, from Annecy. Approach to Thones via Bluffy quite busy car traffic but safe. First part of the climb also quite some car traffic, but from Manigod on quiet. Very nice views during the climb. At the top quiet. Really worthwhile. Back via Serraval, and Col de Marais, beautiful route!
Klim gedaan op 24 juli, hoogseizoen, vanuit Annecy. Aanloop naar Thones via Bluffy behoorlijk druk autoverkeer maar wel veilig. Eerste stuk van de klim ook best wel autoverkeer, maar vanaf Manigod rustig. Zeer mooie uitzichten tijdens het klimmen. Op de top rustig. Echt de moeite waard. Terug via Serraval, en Col de Marais, mooie route!
What a picture! We drove the climb from Annecy via the Col de Bluffy. The views, the little traffic and the serious climbing percentages make it a fantastic climb. At the top an espresso and then towards the Aravis (after the descent of Col Fry only 4 km climbing to the col d'Aravis).
Wat een plaatje! De klim gereden vanuit Annecy via de Col de Bluffy. De uitzichten, het weinige verkeer en de serieuze stijgingspercentages maken het een fantastische klim. Op de top een espressootje en dan richting de Aravis (na de afdaling van de Col Fry nog maar 4 km klimmen tot op de col d'Aravis).
