I did the route from Buis Les Baronnies in October 2024 – although perhaps not the toughest of challenges in the area it's still warms up the legs but its great attraction is the views and the scenery.
Leaving B les B on the D546 takes you through a spectacular ravine which is one of the known points through which Hannibal passed on his way to knock seven bells out of the Roman Empire. For the record, the path to the right of the bridge takes you down to a brilliant swimming hole and great place to cool off in the summer.
About 1/2km after the ravine take the left turn up the D108. You then have a toughish climb to the Col. It's worth pausing at the Mt Ventoux look out. From here you get a fantastic view of the north side of the 'Beast' which is the only side from which it actually looks like a mountain.
The final 1km to the summit is the hardest bit of the ascent but totally worth it for two reasons. Firstly the view into the valley and across the Drôme de Provençe is stunning and secondly the descent to Saint Jalle is wonderful. I've kind of quit skiing these days (lack of snow) and it's these descents that make up for it. The road is empty, the bends are gentle and once you get tucked down you can freewheel the 6kms all the way to the bottom.
Just before you get to Saint Jalle I would recommend taking the D250. It's off to your right just after the firestation. The traditional route back up to the Col is the D54 but the D250 is a much nicer ride; so quiet and plenty of opportunity to enjoy the scenery. Also, as this is a climb finder site and so I'm guessing visitors are looking for climbs, the final couple of Kms are definitley a challenge. However, it does take you through lavender fields and vineyards so you don't really notice the effort.
Turn right onto the D162 at the T jct and take the gentle climb back up to the Col. Have one more look at the view and then enjoy the descent back to Buis Les Baronnies.
The region is legendary for cyclists, with the Ventoux in its sights. But the lovely, quiet cols are also an asset. The Col d'Ey is certainly one of them: the climb is easy, so you can look up and admire the beautiful views. There are no cars here, and that's a joy. You can go on to other passes and build up some very fine routes.
Went up in the morning of the 9th July. Nice, not already tough climb of about'n 6 km with nice views. On one side the Ventoux, on the other (mountain) climbers hanging against a rock. Continued on the other side until the hamlet of Rochebrune, hoping for coffee. Niente! A nice little church cum ruin from the 12th century, though. Lots of lavender and apricot trees. A farmer offered me three of fruit. Très aimable. They were delicious.
Along with the Col de Fontaube, this is one of the most beautiful passes in the region. The scenery is varied and sumptuous, and the climb up the pass is undoubtedly the most beautiful of the three sides. Winding laces between olive trees, rocks for mountaineers, and don't forget to look up to enjoy the scenery, especially the passage (in the middle, just before the campsite) where you can see Saint-Julien (the mythical rock of Buis-les-Baronnies) and Mont Ventoux in the distance behind it. The pass is relatively regular between 5 and 8%, no nasty passages, even if the heat can make the task heavier. The arrival at the summit, which overlooks the splendid Ennuye valley, with a sort of enormous cirque surrounded by mountains will delight you. The descent to Sainte-Jalle is pleasant and fast, with a few more technical sections on a good surface. A must in an extraordinary region for cyclists. The link-up with the Col de Peyruergues to Saint-Auban sur-Ouvèze, amidst apricot trees and lavender fields, makes for a loop that you won't regret, with a downhill return to Buis following the Ouvèze valley. The Col de Soubeyrand, on leaving Sainte-Jalle to the north-east, is also well worth the diversions, and can be included in the loop by descending to Saint-Sauveur-Gouvernet once you have reached the summit. Truly splendid and accessible to most amateur cyclists with a few kilometres in them ;-) Fairly quiet roads in terms of traffic and good surfaces in general.
I come there every year for my cycling holiday. Col d'Ey is always the first climb I do. The view while climbing is wonderful (there used to be an FKK campsite halfway up where a friend squeaked over the wall....).
The climb is even and from Buis the most fun.
See you next week!
On 25/07/2009 I rode up the Col d' Ey. Not especially to climb, but to experience for the first time a passage of the Tour. I found it impressive. Winner of the Ventoux was then José Manuel Garate, then riding for the Rabo bank team. I had the climb, where not much traffic comes, totally for myself because all traffic was prohibited because of the Tour. There was also a brand new layer of asphalt, which made climbing even more fun. As always in the Drome, just like in the Provence, it was pitch-black hot. And that makes climbing just that little bit more difficult. All in all, the climb was not too bad except for a few peaks. You really don't have to be a top climber to get to the top.
This is the most beautiful side of the Col d'Ey. A beautiful climb in the beautiful landscape of the Drôme. Between the olive trees you climb on a good road with not too much traffic. The view is beautiful. There is hardly any shade on this climb, so beware. In summer in the full sun the six percent suddenly feels like 20.
