The arrate from Eibar via Matsaria is a myth in Spain and a killer out of category for cyclists. 8.4% average is a total distortion for this legendary climb.
It is only 5.6 km long like most climbs in the wonderful Basque Country. The first km is barely uphill and the last 1.6 is almost flat as calculated here which means the altimeters are achieved on the middle 3 km section. And the percentages here jump the pan because after a 1km flatter run-up you are immediately presented with sections of 20% and more which makes a triple no unnecessary luxury, even for the pros. The many short hairpins make it even harder but give you a great climbing feeling. What makes this climb even harder is that in the middle section the gradient constantly changes from 10% to very short sections of 23 to 24%. Fortunately, this section is only 3 km but this was enough to make Remco Evenepoel crack the Tour of the Basque Country where this wall is included in the course every year and has been since1941.
There is also the Subida a Arrate, an annual climbing race that is a fantastic spectacle with winners like the Spanish climbing goats of yesteryear like Fernández Ovies, Julio Jimenez, Pedro Torres, Galdos, Lazcano ....maar also Poulidor even twice and the only Belgian on the list, Johan De Muynck . When you know that perhaps the best climber ever, Frederico Bahamontes won here 5 times in a row and then this says a lot about this pulled out wall.
