In defence of the climb, let me say that the whole section of Upper Icknield Way, starting near Tring, passing through Wendover and Ellesborough, and finishing at Great Kimble, is a good undulating route that is fun to ride, when taken as a totality. That stretch does divide opinions, but it's one of the best routes along the foot of the Chilterns, IMHO.
