By far the best route heading west from Kendal. Beast Banks is a challenging climb on its own right, and has been a finish for the Tour of Britain a few times. From the town hall the road rises slightly,. Then you turn the corner left and you're presented with a wall that is much steeper than the 8% sign. Just look at the doorways on the left, where there's a foot difference in the step height. The pavement gets it's own handrail! Keep going. You hit Greenside, where the pros finish and Postman Pat was born. The inspiration for Mrs Goggins ran the post office here - looks for the red plaque on the right just after The Rifleman's Arms. But you've still got a long way to go. A brief easing of the gradient past the green. Then up it goes again, past a restored lime kiln. It finally relents past the quarry entrance and a new housing estate. But don't celebrate too early... Descend over the dual carriageway and then immediately hit more climbing. A left corner hides the hardest part of the climb. Straight and unrelenting for what feels like forever! The verge is thankfully soft for those clipped-in moments. Past a sort of car park on the right and you're finally done
