There is a 1.8 section of gravel around halfway into the climb. It is doable on a road bike. The first part of the gravel is probably the worse, but it gets better and it is also flat for the gravel section. The good thing about this gravel section is that it keeps cars from using the road (when it joins the national road for the final Ks it is busier). A lot of the climb is within a valley and so earlier in the day it is shaded from the sun (which is good in summer). It almost seems like two completely different mountains when using this route to Torre, the road from Unhais de Serra is rough, quiet and wild and then the national road you join between Covilhã and Torre is busier, smoother and very different scenery. I wouldn’t recommend descending this way on a road bike.
