The climb is actually only 4 kilometers long and then runs a little bit sloping doo4 Very steep at the beginning, but fun if you're in the area!
The first few kilometres are tough, then it flattens out and is relatively easy. A nice tarmac road and little traffic. On the descent, nice views towards San Sebastián
A real must if you are in the area and want to hurt your legs. After 4km, you're off the altimeters and can roll out.
A long steep wall followed by a long false flat. This climb from the Donostia / San Sebastian cycling classic is a must do in the region if you can handle the gradient. Descending is best done along the other side, towards Oiartzun, as it is less steep, and handsome with views and more curvy.
The road is good and not very busy. The first 4 kilometres, which start off very strong, are quite steep (with some percentages over 12% on the clock). The real summit is reached after a few descents and climbs. No superb views though, we'd go more for the %!
Although there are only 4 kilometres that concentrate the hardness, it is a very demanding climb. Constant double-digit gradients and no rest through the straights and horseshoes of the road.
In terms of scenery, the first part of the ascent is not very pretty as it passes through an enclosed forest that takes us to the Peñas de Aya.
In recent years it has been included in the Clásica San Sebastián, where it became the point where Remco Evenepoel decided the race in his victories. It was also climbed in the 2007 Tour of the Basque Country, in one of the hardest stages in its history with a finish in Oiartzun (victory for Juanjo Cobo when he was riding for Saunier).
