The long south side from Bellinzona has options. I did the strata Cantonale all the way up and it was quiet and the views were fantastic. Makes you wonder wha the “scenic route” is like. A lovely climb

The climb is steep and goes into the high mountains. Fortunately, at the top you can get a nice drink and relax. The descent and the views are good.👍

This variant of the San Bernardino is quite tough. It is never extremely steep, but the hairpin bends combined with the length of the climb did not leave me cold, in any case. Although one reads that this variant is busier than the other (via the cycle path) I found the climb downright quiet. Some motorbikes and the occasional car. The road surface is fine and in San Bernardino you can fill your water bottles. The climb does not offer that much shelter, so it is definitely warm. The countless amounts of hairpin bends make this climb a real treat. The last 7 kilometres go through a real Alpine rocky landscape.

I started from Riazzino and stopped in San Bernardino village, overall it was a very challenging but satisfying ride, to be done at least once.

Climbed starting from Bellinzona on a scorching hot day!
It's really an experience to see the vegetation transitioning from palm trees to alpine climate.
The climb itself is quite nice, never too steep (unless... keep reading), not so much crowded on a weekday, and with a great road surface. Nice opportunity to rest, eat and get water refills at S. Bernardino village, and finish the last push on the beautiful last part.
At Mesocco you can either continue on the main road... or take the bike path (signposted) that spiders up the right side of the Moesa until Pian San Giacomo. Do it only if you are still fresh, and you like challenges! The 5 km detour is MUCH steeper, rarely below 9%, on very narrow roads.

Long, long and somewhat boring climb in the initial part. For me, the fun starts in Mesocco.
Beautiful surroundings and views
Don't be fooled by the signs pointing to S.Bernardino, that's the village. For the pass, you still have 8km to go at 5/6%
Perfect road surface. Traffic is usually moderate
Many fountains along the route
Possibility of refreshments on arrival

Begli ambienti e panorami
Fondo stradale perfetto. Il traffico è solitamente modesto
Molte fontane lungo il percorso
Possibilità di ristoro all'arrivo

Super climb, from Lostallo very long, but constant slope and nowhere too steep, and above all. extremely quiet with a nice road surface. A moment of rest when the slope flattens out at San Giacomo and then again in the village of San Bernardino (beware, after that you still have a piece to go! and then there will be motorcycles/autos at....).

Admittedly, I started in Soazza. The first sign indicated San Bernardino for 16 km. That's where I made the rookie mistake due to poor preparation. San Bernardino is a village which you reach after a descent. After that there is a 8 km steep climb. The reward after the disappointment was great. Fantastic landscape. Even saw deer and finally you come to an idyllic lake. If you have time and energy to build a tower of boulders.

Fantastisch landschap.

Pictures say it all! Nice tough climb in beautiful surroundings. Good preparation is a must, lots of motorized traffic.

Foto’s zeggen genoeg!
