Great climb that I started from Thusis. In fact, this is the ideal warm-up climb for a week of climbing and scrambling. From Hinterrhein, the climb becomes really spectacular with a beautiful series of hairpin bends. Moreover, the percentages are not too bad, which makes it even more enjoyable. In the last few kilometres, you automatically get that typical alpine feeling' especially when you find a beautiful lake at the top. Do not miss it!... read more

This side of the San Bernardino is a fairly easy and very even climb. Because through traffic takes the motorway, this is a very quiet climb. You are spoilt with beautiful hairpin bends all the way up. During the first part you have a view of the valley, during the second part you come to a more rocky alpine landscape. The road surface is superb. I give four stars because it is not the five of really mega-fantastic climbs. 4.5 stars would have been fine too. Top climb!

Topklim!

It’s a short but really enjoyable climb. I climbed it at around 5pm and there was hardly any traffic at all. The best part is the long descent towards Bellinzona because there is a great visibility of the road ahead, the road is in good condition and there are very few cars. Views are not super. You can refill your water bottles just before starting at the town of Hinterrhein.

If you like hairpin bends: great! In the beginning there are 16 in a row - they all have a different name - and then some. Once you're through the hairpins you are already at high altitude and it is very beautiful. For Swiss standards, the climb from this side not super high. With this pass you also cross the German-Italian language border.
