Starting in the centre of Chiavenna wonderfully laid out upstream along the Mera mountain river, which is crossed several times via bridges. There are already some short spirited climbing stretches.
After cycling past the Lago di Villa di Chiavenna and the village of San Barnaba, after a bridge over the latter part of the lake, you return to the main route for the Swiss continuation to the summit.

Absolute preference for this starting route and for the traffic on the remainder of the climb you will need some luck. Weekend there seems to be less freight but more tourist traffic. Early start (before 8am) and late finish (after 6pm) weekdays there is also less traffic.
