I did it in 2 stages: on the 1st evening, after arriving in Pailherols, I went to the buron de la Tuillière, a cul-de-sac located about 25 m lower and about 400 m from the high point, which is a little further and higher than on the map, at # 1360 m. This is only 28.3 km but still 803 m of ascent, with a climb from the Gaye bridge over the Goul (# 817 m) to the Col de Curebourse and back to Pailherols. Magnificent scenery: to the north, views of the Monts du Cantal (Plomb du Cantal, 1855 m, i... read more

I did it in 2 stages:
on the 1st evening, after arriving in Pailherols, I went to the buron de la Tuillière, a cul-de-sac located about 25 m lower and about 400 m from the high point, which is a little further and higher than on the map, at # 1360 m. This is only 28.3 km but still 803 m of ascent, with a climb from the Gaye bridge over the Goul (# 817 m) to the Col de Curebourse and back to Pailherols. Magnificent scenery: to the north, views of the Monts du Cantal (Plomb du Cantal, 1855 m, is, I think, hidden by Puy Gros, 1594 m) and to the west, the valley of the Cère, 600 m below. What about the road over the last 5 km? The percentage km by km doesn't give you any idea of the difficulty, there are passages verging on 15% but they never exceed a few hundred m, phew! As for the descent, it's not easy, there's a bit of gravel, fortunately I had the gravel, you get carried away very quickly by the speed, but be careful! there're lots of little speed bumps designed to evacuate rainwater, so you'd better not exceed 30 km/h there!
A few days later, I did the AR Pailherols-Vic sur Cère, again, a short distance (27.6km) but a good climb (746m). The descent from the Col de Curebourse is via the main D54 road and the ascent (as indicated on the map) via the D154. Advantages: 1 km shorter without excessive gradients, fewer cars and a more open space in the middle of meadows and less in the forest.
