The gradient is gentle for the first few kilometres, but at Grust there are a number of twists and turns and the gradient rises. At the end, the road is still wide and in good condition, forming terraces with spectacular views below.October is the perfect month, with mild temperatures, no traffic and superb autumn colours!

So you often build up that climb after the Tourmalet. Well, beware. It's harder than it looks. A lot of people were telling us that it's a good climb. I think it's a lot easier on a dry climb, but let's just say that this one is worth suffering for! Like Vinokourov in 2003, who lost any chance of aiming for victory in that year's Tour.

A superb ascent not to be missed when visiting the region. The asphalt is impeccable, traffic is fairly light (barely 3 cars on my ascent in July), and the scenery is beautiful and changing (alternating between views of the village of Luz, the crimes of the Pyrenees and the winding road! An experience not to be missed! There are plenty of shady stretches to lower the temperature a little.

L'asphalte est irréprochable, la circulation est plutôt faible (a peine 3 voiture lors de mon ascension en Juillet), et les paysages sont beaux et changeants (on alterne entre les vue sur le village de Luz, les crimes des Pyrénées et la route en lacet qui serpente ! Beautiful climb with lots of Tour history. Long climb that keeps rising. Reasonable road surface, though sometimes mediocre in the bends. It can be spooky in the Pyrenees in June, so we climbed the Luz Ardiden in mist with drizzle, but fortunately the clouds broke open briefly at the top and a watery sun came out. With wet road surface, the descent back is an exciting undertaking though.
Prachtige klim met veel Tourgeschiedenis. Lange klim die maar door blijft stijgen. Redelijk wegdek, alhoewel soms wel matig in de bochten. In juni kan het wel spoken in de Pyreneeën, dus wij hebben de Luz Ardiden in de mist met mieserregen beklommen, maar gelukkig brak de bewolking boven even open en kwam er een waterig zonnetje tevoorschijn. Met nat wegdek is de afdaling terug wel een spannende onderneming.
Nice climb, quiet (a few cars's and two handfuls of cyclists) and nice views. Ridden after theTourmalet and that was fine to combine. Then enjoyed coffee, croissants and all you can get your hands on on one of the nice terraces in the always busy Luz Saint Sauveur.
Lekkere klim, rustig (een paar auto's en twee handjesvol fietsers) en mooie uitzichten. Gereden na deTourmalet en dat was prima te combineren. Daarna lekker genieten van koffie, croissants en alles wat je te pakken kunt krijgen op één van de leuke terrasjes in het altijd drukke Luz Saint Sauveur.

Only did this ride because the Tourmalet was closed. We did this climb in cloudy weather & cloud level was about 1500m so last section was in the fog. Would have loved to have seen the famous switchbacks from higher up! However, a very enjoyable cycle. The road was in excellent condition all the way up, and all the hairpins make the ride very enjoyable. Traffic was very light too. Preferred this route to the Hautacam. Started and finished in Argeles Gazost and there is also a lovely ride through a narrow gorge for a few km between Soulom and Luc-Saint-Saveur.

Some spectacular views towards Luz and the other end of the valley. The summit is apparently only open in te winter for the ski lifts or something, as I had a similar view to what others posted. A bit shameful for an otherwise nice and famous climb, but I guess it's not worth it to keep a cafe or restaurant open during summer... Easy to combine with the Tourmalet from either end, depending on where you stay.
I rode the Luz Ardiden climb in July 2018 with 3 friends whilst we were staying in the area to watch the the Tour de France and ride some cols. Having ridden the Tourmalet the day before I had been told this would be somewhat easier. It is shorter but don’t be deceived into thinking it’s easy. This climb is a good test. The early part of the climb through the small village is nice and then as you leave the houses, you enter a forested section where the gradients rise to around 10％ for a while. Once you come out of the trees, the vistas open up and you can really appreciate the beauty of the climb as you look up towards the ski station in the distance. There are plenty off hairpins and this allows you to look back at where you have come from. As the road only goes up to the ski station, in the summer the road is virtually traffic free and a delight to ride. We rode up in very hot sunshine but a storm rolled in as we submitted and we had to descend in torrential rain back to Luz Saint-Sauveur. We retreated to a cafe for some lunch and sun was back out by the time we came out from the cafe.
Jaa, beautiful. Everything you'd expect from a Pyrenean col, but friendlier than its mates nearby. A very nice fairly even climb, not overly long, and picturesquely beautiful. Fine hairpin turns towards the summit and everywhere your rasping panting is accompanied by the cheerful clanging of sheep bells. A good climb to get into the swing of things, if you have just settled in for a cycling holiday. Because it never really gets very punishing.

Een hele mooie redelijk gelijkmatige klim, niet overdreven lang, en schilderachtig mooi. Fijne haarspeldbochten richting de top en overal wordt je raspende gehijg begeleid door de vrolijke klinkende schapenbellen. Een goeie klim om er een beetje in te komen, als je net bent neergestreken voor een fietsvakantie. Want echt heel penibel wordt ie nooit.
Started with sunshine from Argelès Gazost and soon cycled up in the rain.
Not really a climb you'd expect in the Pyrenees, and I actually felt more like I was in the Alps in terms of gradients, not bad after having done some jagged climbs already.
Fortunately, the sun slowly broke out when I reached the top and I was finally able to see something of the surroundings, which made up for a lot.
Seen 10 cyclists and 1 car during the whole climb, so you have the mountain to yourself.

Niet echt een klim die je zou verwachten in de Pyreneeën, en ik waande me eigenlijk ook meer in de Alpen qua stijgingspercentages, niet verkeerd na al wat grillige beklimmingen gedaan te hebben.
Gelukkig brak de zon langzaam uit toen ik boven was en kon ik eindelijk iets van de omgeving zien en dat maakte veel goed.
10 Wielrenners en 1 auto tijdens de hele klim gezien, dus je hebt de berg voor je alleen.
Despite the fact that there was little to see of the fog, I still enjoyed this climb and especially the descent. Recommended to do, nice in combination with the Tourmalet!

13.4 km at 7.4％. Pretty tough, especially when it is climbed last in a ride. Just before, I had already climbed Lac des Gloriettes and then the 2087m-high Troumouse and already had a good 70 km in my legs. On top of that, it was sweltering hot. I had ever felt better at the start of a final climb..... Witness my climbing time. But I am also rarely concerned with climbing times. Enjoying it, and reveling in the relinquishment, the battle with yourself, with the elements, gradients and especially with the forces of gravity. Since 1985, this climb has been catalogued in the Tour as out-of-category. Coincidence or not? Five of the nine arrivals on this climb were won by Spaniards. At the last edition in 2021, however, Pogacar was the strongest. I thought it was a beautiful climb, and for hairpin lovers.... This is the place to be. It may not be the Stelvio, but still.... At the top, as is often the case with ski resorts in summer, there is virtually nothing to see..... Everything is closed, desolate and deserted. But then comes..... the descent. In a word, phenomenal. The lack of trees means you can see far in several hairpin bends and, in the absence of traffic, use the full width of the road to cut corners perfectly. You can also pedal briskly along the wide road with (in 2014) beautiful asphalt. In short, if you're in the area... you really shouldn't pass this one up.
13.4 km aan 7.4％. Best wel pittig, zeker wanneer hij als laatste in een rit beklommen wordt. Net ervoor was ik al het Lac des Gloriettes en daarna de 2087 m hoge Troumouse opgereden en had ik al een dikke 70 km in de benen. Daarbij was het ook nog eens broeierig warm. Ik had me ooit beter gevoeld bij aanvang van een laatste klim..... Getuige mijn klimtijd. Maar het gaat mij ook zelden om klimtijden. Genieten, en kicken op het afzien, het gevecht met jezelf, met de elementen, stijgingspercentages en vooral met de zwaartekrachten. Sinds 1985 staat deze klim in de Tour gecatalogeerd als buiten categorie. Toeval of niet? Vijf van de negen aankomsten op deze klim werden door Spanjaarden gewonnen. Tijdens de laatste editie in 2021 was Pogacar echter de sterkste. Ik vond het een prachtige klim, en voor de liefhebbers van haarspeldbochten…. Hier moet je zijn. Het is wel niet de Stelvio, maar toch…. Boven is, zoals dat dikwijls gaat bij skistations in de zomer, zo goed als niks te zien….. Alles gesloten, desolaat en verlaten. Maar dan komt het….. de afdaling. In een woord, fenomenaal. Door het ontbreken van bomen kan je verschillende haarspeldbochten ver kijken en, bij gebrek aan verkeer de volledig breedte van de weg benutten om alzo de bochten perfect af te snijden. Je kan ook flink bijtrappen over de brede weg met (in 2014) mooi asfalt. Kortom, als je in de buurt bent… deze mag je echt niet laten liggen.
It is a nice climb especially once you are above the tree line. There you have beautiful views over the valley and mountain landscape. In the 8 and 9％ parts of the altitude profile there are quite some 10 and 11％ parts. This can make it quite difficult for some people. Don't forget to drive to the back of the parking lot when you reach the last pole. There you can look out over all the hairpin bends you have ridden. I am via the alternative route descended (via Viscos). There is a narrow road with lots of gravel. So more suitable to drive up via.
Het is een mooie klim zeker als je eenmaal boven de boomgrens bent. Daar heb je prachtige uitzichten over het dal en berglandschap. In de 8 en 9％ stukken uit het hoogte profiel zitten aardig wat stukken van 10 en een stuk van 11％. Dat kan het voor een aantal personen behoorlijk moeilijk maken. Vergeet als je boven bent bij het laatsten paaltje niet om even naar achter op de parkeerplaats te rijden. Daar kan je uitkijken over alle haarspeldbochten die je gereden hebt. Ik ben via de alternatieve route afgedaald (via Viscos). Daar is een smalle weg met veel grind. Dus meer geschikt om via naar boven te rijden.
Beautiful climb. First kilometers in the forest with some beautiful panoramas on the valley. The last twists and turns are magical, especially in the descent... the road redone for the Tour de France 2021 is perfect!

Nice climb, which certainly invites to a nice climbing rhythm. We rode up here on a sunny and warm day. And certainly when the tree line is passed, this is an extra factor to take into account. The image of Lemond, who won the Tour in 1990 with his shirt completely open, fits nicely here. After 2/3 of the climb, watch out that you don't turn off to the village of Bederet. There is nothing to do at the top, so quickly down is the motto.
Mooie klim, die zeker uitnodigt tot een fijn klimritme. Wij reden hier op een zonnige en warme dag omhoog. En zeker als de boomgrens gepasseerd is, is dit wel een extra factor om rekening mee te houden. Het beeld van Lemond die hier in 1990 met het shirt helemaal open de Tour naar zijn hand zette, past hier mooi bij. Na 2/3 van de klim uitkijken dat je niet afslaat naar het dorpje Bederet. Boven is niets te beleven, dus snel naar beneden is het devies.
Cycled up the 29 hairpins counting towards the small ski station, which got its fame as an extra category finish in the Tour.
From the centre of Luz St. Sauveur the road first goes downhill (direction Gavarnie) and after the bridge (Pont de Gave) on the right over the mountain river the climb starts with the first two hairpins to see our departure town sinking into the panoramic view over the valley. The well-known cycling information signs are already there every kilometer (distance to top/altitude/％ next km). From Grust, the last inhabited part, follows the difficult middle section with 10％ sections.
You cycle on perfectly curved asphalt through the forests with hardly any traffic in the summer. After 10 kilometres of climbing you come out of the forest on an open mountain side for the final hairpin curve series to the top. This is summer deserted with an empty parking lot and ski lifts, closed catering but with a flock of sheep running loose and a fantastic view of the just cycled underlying curve route.

De 29 haarspeldbochten tellende klim naar het kleine skistation, dat zijn bekendheid kreeg als aankomst buiten categorie in de Tour, op gefietst.
Vanuit centrum Luz St.Sauveur gaat het eerst bergaf (richting Gavarnie) om na de brug (Pont de Gave) rechts over de bergrivier de klim te beginnen met de twee eerste haarspeldbochten om nadien ons vertrekstadje in het panoramisch zicht over de vallei te zien wegzakken. De bekende fietsinfobordjes zijn dan al op de afspraak elke kilometer (afstand tot top/hoogte/％ volgende km). Vanaf Grust, het laatste bewoonde deel, volgt het lastige middendeel met 10％ stukken.
Je fietst op perfect bochtig asfalt door de bossen met zomers amper verkeer. Na 10 kilometer klimmen komt men het bos uit op een open bergflank voor de finale haarspeldbochtenreeks naar de top. Deze is zomers verlaten met een lege parking en skiliften, gesloten horeca doch met een loslopende kudde schapen en een fantastisch uitzicht op de zojuist gefietste onderliggende bochtenroute.

From Luz we started the trip to the in summer deserted ski station Luz-Ardiden. Due to a dense fog we hardly saw anything of the surroundings. The climb is quite tough with lots of hairpin bends, especially in the last part.
Vanuit Luz de tocht aangevat naar het in de zomer verlaten skistation Luz-Ardiden. Door een dichte mist zagen we nauwelijks iets van de omgeving. De klim is vrij pittig met tal van haarspeldbochten, vooral in het laatste gedeelte.
Really nice climb. Perfect brand new road surface, very quiet. At the top there is nothing, only water tap on the side of the elevator building.

Today I did the Luz Ardiden, my last col of my holiday, from Luz St Saveur. I found it hard, bits that even reached 13 and 12%. Whole climb between 8 and 10%. It was hot today, but enough coolness between the forests. Lots of curves, nice views and almost at the top you can see marmots running on the plains. Unfortunately it is a dull affair at the top. The descent towards Luz St Saveur required constant concentration due to the many hairpin bends. All in all I enjoyed my time in the Haute Pyrenees.
Vandaag de Luz Ardiden, mijn laatste col van mijn vakantie, vanuit Luz St Saveur gedaan. Ik vond het zwaar, stukjes dat zelfs de 13 en 12% aantikten. Gehele klim tussen 8 en 10%. Het was warm vandaag, maar genoeg koelte tussen de bossen. Veel bochten, mooi uitzicht en bijna bij de top kun je marmotten op de vlaktes zien rennen. Het is helaas een saaie aandoening op de top. De afdaling richting Luz St Saveur vergde continu concentratie door de vele haarspeldbochten. Al met al genoten van mijn tijd in de haute Pyrenieeën.
This was the 5th mountain in the Marmotte Pyrenees. They say it is easier than Alpe D'Huez, but I found all those parts of 9 and 10 % when you have already conquered 4800 altitude meters, like in my case, quite tough. If you cycle this mountain alone or in combination with a second mountain, the mountain is absolutely doable. Fine and good road surface and nowhere too steep.

Er staat bij dat hij makkelijk is dan Alpe D'Huez, maar ik vond al die stukken van 9 en 10 % wanneer je zoals in mijn geval al 4800 hoogtemeters overwonnen hebt, best pittig. Fiets je deze berg als enige of in combinatie met een tweede berg dan is de berg absoluut goed te doen. Fijn en goed wegdek en nergens te steil.
Good road surface? At least not in summer 2017. Road in bad condition and in some places an attempt to repair by applying a thick layer of gravel which really does not descend well. Tip: climb it once via Viscos, is a nicer route.

On a somewhat cloudy day, the last 4 km in the clouds, I did this climb. Pretty steep in the beginning, but nice at the end. 2km before the summit turn left at a t-junction to get to the right summit. The road surface is good and there is hardly any traffic.
Op een wat bewolkte dag, de laatste 4km in de wolken, deze klim gedaan. In het begin behoorlijk steil en op het laatst loopt ie lekker. 2km voor de top links afslaan op een t-splitsing om op de juiste top boven te komen. Het wegdek is goed en er is nauwelijks verkeer.
I rode this climb 3 years ago, the day before the Tour climbed this col. I followed this route of the climb, but I'm not sure if I should also do the climb via Viscos. Does anyone have experience with that?
Ik heb deze klim 3 jaar geleden opgereden, de dag voordat de Tour deze col beklom. Heb ik deze route van de klim gevolgd, alleen ik zit te twijfelen of ik de klim ook via Viscos zou doen. Heeft iemand daar ervaring mee?
