The climb itself is very interesting because you don't often get the chance to go over such steep gradients on a bike. On the other hand, some stretches of road are really bad (I would insist) and if that adds difficulty to the already difficult climb, these stretches are dangerous on the descent... Then there are quite a few cars in the summer, and the road remains narrow, so it's not pleasant to go through at this time of year. So I give it 3 stars, with a better road it would be 4 o... read more

Very nice climb and very challenging! Quite exceptional in France too, 4 km at an average of 12 % of climbing! The first stretch up to the turnoff to Bionnassay is doable, then it starts. Contrary to the profile above, the first hairpin bend and for the stretch just after it is already very steep. Here I already saw 19% passing by on my bike computer. After that it is also steep, but at a slow pace actually quite doable. A beautiful road though, with nice hairpins and the higher you get, more and more views of the snow-capped mountains. When you get to Bionnassay and turn left after the restaurant, a wall starts that seems to have no end. Here there is a stretch of some's 500m long that does not go below 15% and regularly touches 20%. If you think you are there, it is a few more hups up and down to the parking le Crozat where it becomes unpaved. Here you have an immense view of the Bionnassay glacier and Mont Blanc. This would be a really good alternative to the Bettex climb in the Tour de France.
