My favourite peak in the Pyrenees (it's just across the road from where I live), hard but so beautiful, a must-do!

You can start the climb at Argeles-gazos to warm up, as you'd better be in good shape to tackle this climb, one of the most difficult in the region... Although the slope is gentle at times, and there are even a few descents to pick up speed and/or change gear, you'll then inevitably hit a wall at 10 > 13%... the gradient is irregular, making it difficult to maintain a steady pace. What's more, it's a beautiful climb, with views of the surrounding peaks and valley throughout. At the summit of Tramassel, a small inn awaits you for a snack! A must-do (especially in late winter/early spring with snow + awakening of nature)!
Vous pouvez démarrer la montée à Argeles-gazos pour vous échauffer, car il vaut mieux être en forme pour affronter cette montée là, une des plus difficile de la région... Car si parfois la pente est douce , si parfois il y a même quelques descentes , pour reprendre de la vitesse et / ou changer de braquet, vous allez ensuite irrémédiablement " taper" dans un mur à 10 > 13 %... la pente y est irrégulière et en cela , difficile d'y tenir un rythme constant. De plus l'ascension est très belle avec vue sur les pics environnants et vallée pendant tout l'effort. Au sommet de Tramassel , une petite auberge vous attend pour collation ! A faire absolument ( surtout fin hiver / début printemps avec neige + reveil de la nature) !

Climbed in July 2025 during Cycl'n Trip (pass reserved for cyclists in the morning), very demanding climb, great pleasure and relief to reach the top. Impeccable surface and incredible descent (especially without a car😅).

Great climb I did during the Pyrénéene 2025, but I still classify it in the rather hard category, where you need to be at least a little trained to do it. I climbed it after the Tourmalet, so that may have distorted my judgement a little, but I found it very hard, because it was irregular and there were no breaks.
Super montée faites lors de la Pyrénéene 2025, je la classe quand même dans la catégorie des montées plutôt dur, ou il faut être un minimum entrainé pour la faire. Gravis après le Tourmalet donc cela a peut être un peu faussé mon jugement, mais je l'ai trouvé très dur, car irréguliere et sans moment de relâche.

Unlike many opinion here, I do not go along with the story of irregularity. Compared to e.g. Col de la Loze, this is not so bad. It is just a generally tough climb with the occasional small section where there is some recuperation. Lovely on a sunny morning in August. Quite a bit of traffic on track. Asphalt no doubt good.
In tegenstelling tot veel mening hier ga ik niet mee in het verhaal van de onregelmatigheid. In vergelijking met bv Col de la Loze valt dit erg goed mee. Het is gewoon een algemeen lastige klim met af en toe een klein stukje waar wat te recupereren valt. Zalig op een zonnige ochtend in augustus. Best wel wat verkeer op baan. Asfalt zonder meer goed.
One of my favourite climbs! There aren't many views for 2/3 of the way up because you're in the woods, but at the top, the scenery is splendid. What I remember most was the irregularity of the slope: Hautacam is a constant succession of small flats and walls. The asphalt here is excellent, thanks to the repeated passes of the Tour. A must!
Une de mes montées favorites ! Peu de points de vue sur 2/3 de la montée car vous êtes dans les bois, mais au sommet, les paysages sont splendides. Ce que je retiens, c'est surtout l'irrégularité de la pente : Hautacam est une succession permanente de petits replats et de murs. L'asphalte y est excellent avec les passages répétés du Tour. Un incontournable !

What a ride! Hautacam is tough but **accessible**, with an unpredictable gradient that both challenges and gives moments to breathe.
The climb starts deceptively easy, winding through houses and farms, but don’t be fooled—the **last 6 km** are pure high mountain terrain. With an **average incline of 11％**, there’s that unsettling feeling of not knowing what’s coming next. But once deep into the final stretch, the **raw nature** takes over, surrounded by stunning peaks in every direction.
I only realized how demanding the climb was during the descent—it felt **endless**! Hautacam was an incredible experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a true cycling challenge.
A very tough and irregular climb on the way, the views are beautiful, but you probably only have eyes for the (good) tarmac. When you finally reach a meadow area, it takes yet a long time before you finally reach the summit. There's not much to do at the summit and no catering facilities, so there's nothing else to do but get those in the valley.
Een hele zware en onregelmatige klim onderweg is het uitzicht mooi, maar waarschijnlijk heb je alleen oog voor het (goede) asfalt. Als je eindelijk in een weidegebied komt duurt het doch nog lang voordat je eindelijk op de top bent. Op de top is niet veel te doen en geen horecagelegenheid, dus er zit niks anders op dan die in het dal te gaan halen.
I made the ascent in August 2024. The road surface is in perfect condition, which makes the descent very pleasant. The climb is tricky with lots of changes in gradient, but at least you don't get bored! The view over the valley is magnificent. The road is quiet in summer, with very little traffic. There were even horses in the middle of the road on the last few kilometres.
J'ai fait l'ascension en Août 2024. Le revêtement de la route est en parfait état ce qui rend la descente très agréable. La montée est casse-patte avec beaucoup de changement de pente mais au moins on ne s'ennuie pas! La vue sur la vallée est magnifique. La route est calme en été, peu de trafic. Il y avait même de chevaux au milieu de la route sur les derniers km.
On day 1 of our cycling holiday, we embarked on the Hautacam. That one chops. Started with 30 degrees and thus fully roasted. The coke at the summit was very welcome.
Tarmac still fine, the road up is fairly quiet and the view at the summit(Tramassel) more than worthwhile.

Op dag 1 van onze fietsvakantie aangevangen met de Hautacam. Die hakt erin. Vertrokken met 30 graden en dus volledig gebraden. De cola op de top was zeer welkom.
Asfalt nog steeds prima, de weg omhoog is vrij rustig en het uitzicht op de top(Tramassel) meer dan de moeite waard.
Mede vanwege de tourhistorie zeker doen!
Hautacam is as others here also say, a tricky one because of the difference in gradient. I found it quite tough, I have also ridden up Superbargeres and Tourmalet this week, and this one wasn't inferior in my opinion. Great views and definitely worth climbing eem kilometre to the top of Tramassel.
Hautacam is zoals anderen hier ook zeggen, een lastige door het verschil in hellingsgraad. Ik vond hem vrij zwaar, ik ben deze week ook Superbargeres en Tourmalet op gereden, en deze moest toch niet onderdoen vond ik. Prachtig uitzicht en zeker de moeite om eem kilometer door te klimmen naar de top van Tramassel.

I think they want a TdF finish back on the Hautacam. Currently, there are plenty of works underway to renew asphalt. In terms of kilometres and gradient similar to Alpe d'Huez, but it is much more irregular, with very variable sections from 6 to 15 per cent. From 1,000 htm, the col was in fog today....

Kwa kilometers en stijgingspercentage vergelijk baar met Alpe d'Huez, maar deze is veel onregelmatiger, met zeer wisselende stukken van 6 naar 15 procent. Vanop 1.000 htm lag de col vandaag in de mist...
We cycled in early June 2024. The first half has lower gradients but was tough (both up and down) because the road was in poor condition. To be fair it looked like they were preparing the road for some resurfacing, but parts were extremely treacherous coming back down. However, in the second half the road has been resurfaced and was excellent. A few tough sections, particularly in the middle, but nothing too sustained. At the Hautacam ski station, plenty of horses milling about in the huge car park. Not the most scenic ride we have done.

With clammy hands on the brake levers, we headed down the descent, until only after a few kilometres had we descended out of the fog and could safely see where we were riding. Beklommen in de vooravond van een bewolkte, frisse augustusdag. De klim onderscheidt klimmers van niet-klimmers: door het grillige profiel raak je moeilijk in een ritme en moet je vaak lopen op de pedalen om weer wat snelheid te maken. Als je daarvan houdt (zoals ik) zeker een aanrader. Anders is het maar een stomme weg naar een skistation. De grootste uitdaging zat hem in het weer: de laatste kilometers reden we in steeds dichtere mist, en eenmaal op de top waren we nat van de condensatie. We moesten roepen om elkaar terug te vinden, ook al stonden we 20 meter uit elkaar op het parkeerterrein. Met klamme handen op de remgrepen de afdaling in, tot we pas na enkele kilometers weer uit de mist waren gedaald en we veilig konden kijken waar we reden. Check het weerbericht!
I was prepared for the worst, as I had a hard time getting up this climb indoors. In real life, it doesn't disappoint, but it was less of a beast than I expected. Irregular, but no double digit grades either. As the page titel suggests, the summit sign to Hautacam is not the end of it and you can continue 1.5 km (105 altimeters) to Tramassel. I encountered a foggy and cold summit, with no view.
You go into battle with a wild beast. Rugged beauty everywhere, but that climb doesn't run like clockwork. There is never a rhythm to catch and every time you think: now I've got it, another scorched corner looms. It didn't help that it was running above 30 degrees, at the same time, at ease and gnashing my teeth. I sat marvelling at the scenery, once at the summit ( which, by the way, is 1.5 km above the Hautacam ) It was well worth the struggle. If you are not afraid of overrunning flocks of sheep, it is a very nice challenge.
Je gaat de strijd aan met een wild beest. Ruige schoonheid overal, maar die klim loopt voor geen meter. Er is nooit een ritme te pakken en steeds als je denkt: nu heb ik hem, dan doemt er weer een verzengede bocht op. Het hielp niet mee dat het boven de dertig graden liep, tegelijk, op het gemak en de tanden op elkaar. Ik heb me zitten vergapen aan het landschap, eenmaal op de top ( die overigens 1,5 km boven de Hautacam ligt ) Het was de strijd meer dan waard. Als je niet bang bent voor overrennende kuddes schapen, dan is het een zeer mooie uitdaging.
Done in the afternoon. What a beast. However well trained and done plenty of tough climbs, but this was different. Very irregular. Still highly recommended and the view on top is magnificent. Don't underestimate it and don't just do it on the side like me, after a 10 KM hike and a lunch with chips.
Gedaan in de namiddag. Wat een beest. Nochtans goed getraind en genoeg zware beklimmingen gedaan, maar dit was andere koek. Zeer onregelmatig. Toch een aanrader en het uitzicht bovenop is magnifiek. Onderschat het niet en doe het er niet even bij zoals ik; na een 10 KM hike en een lunch met patat.
Today in dense fog I rode up this calf biter. Although the percentages above 8 ％ are well annoying for me (a bit too heavy...) I find those intermediate sections with 6-8 ％ again a relief. Unfortunately no visibility during the climb but once at the top it opened up and the descent was fine. Apart from some narrow streets (where only 1 car can pass at a time) the descent was lovely. Ticked off!
Vandaag in dichte mist deze kuitenbijter maar eens omhoog gereden. Hoewel de percentages boven de 8 ％ voor mij (iets te zwaar...) goed vervelend zijn vind ik die tussenstukken met 6-8 ％ weer een verademing. Wegdek prima en weinig verkeer ook lekker! Helaas geen zicht tijdens de klim maar eenmaal op de top trok het open en was het prima afdalen. Op enkele nauwe straatjes na (waar maar 1 auto tegelijk door kan) heerlijk afdalen. Afgevinkt!
I did not expect this climb to be so terribly hard! From the elevation profile, you can't tell it has such steep irregular sections. I'm glad I did the Hautacam and Col de Tramassel, but next time I think I'll skip this one.
Ik had niet verwacht dat deze klim zo verschrikkelijk zwaar zou zijn! Aan het hoogteprofiel is niet te zien dat er zulke steile onregelmatige stukken in zitten. Ik ben blij dat ik de Hautacam en Col de Tramassel heb gedaan, maar de volgende keer sla ik deze denk ik over.
What a great col, really a must do if you're around here. It is not super crowded (for a Sunday morning), and the road surface is fine. True, it has some irregular steepness, but that's exactly what allows you to catch your breath now and then, for example if you've just finished 2km of 10/11％.
Grandiose descent, pretty good overview everywhere and lots of somewhat wide bends that you can enjoy running down.
Restaurant on top of the col de Tramassel was unfortunately not open, but that did not spoil the fun, beautiful views from this col in all directions.

Wat een geweldige col, echt een must do als je hier in de buurt bent. Hij is niet superdruk (voor een zondagochtend), en het wegdek is prima. Hij heeft inderdaad wat onregelmatige steiltes, maar dat biedt juist de mogelijkheid af en toe weer even op adem te komen, bijvoorbeeld als je net 2 km van 10/11％ achter de rug hebt.
Grandioze afdaling, behoorlijk goed overzicht overal en veel enigszins ruime bochten die je lekker kan laten lopen naar beneden.
Restaurantje boven op de col de Tramassel was helaas niet open, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken, prachtig uitzicht vanaf deze col alle kanten op.

A very irregular climb, not really my type of pass as it is very difficult to find your rhythm, one pass at a time, sometimes with walls above 10％, sometimes with flats at 5-6％.

This was a very nice climb. I didn't want to miss it and had prepared myself for the worst, but it actually went quite well. The gradients are different from what is shown here, but the general picture is right. The short sections where you can relax your legs for a while are followed by steep percentages of over 10％. I don't really mind that. I like this kind of climbing. It is a kind of interval training.
Well, if this is the climb where the Tour of 2022 will be decided, you can't miss it.
Dit was een erg leuke klim. Ik wilde hem niet missen en had me op het ergste voorbereid, maar het ging eigenlijk heel lekker. De stijgingspercentages lopen wel anders dan hier aangegeven, maar het algemene beeld klopt wel. De korte stukjes waar je je benen even kunt ontspannen worden gevolgd door stevige percentages van boven de 10％. Ik vind dat niet echt een probleem. Dit soort klimmen ligt me wel. Het is een soort intervaltraining.
Tjsa, en als dit dan de klim is waar de Tour van 2022 definitief werd beslist, dan mag je hem eigenlijk niet missen.
Very nice climb, but really "leg-breaking " with constant changes of slope...
Early in the morning, the first half is in the shade. To be preferred in hot weather.
The second half offers a superb view of the Luz valley and Luz Ardiden opposite.

Twice I was at the summit. Once in a single ascent and a second time in combination with the Soulor and the Spandelles. Both times sweltering hot. Still, one of the tougher climbs in that region. If you combine this with other climbs, make sure you haven't shot all your gunpowder and there's plenty left in the tank. A nasty climb, tough, irregular and no shade anywhere.
Tweemaal was ik op de top. Een keer in een enkele beklimming en een tweede keer in combinatie met de Soulor en de Spandelles. Beide keren broeierig warm. Toch wel een van de zwaardere beklimmingen in die regio. Als je dit combineert met andere beklimmingen, zorg dan dat je niet al je kruit verschoten hebt en er nog voldoende in de tank zit. Een nijdige klim, zwaar, onregelmatig en nergens schaduw.
Quite a challenge! Not very long, but the lack of regularity makes this climb hard. Sometimes the road goes down for a while, but there is a sign next to the road that the next kilometer is 10 percent average. Then you know that a little further on it will be tough! When you are on top of the Hautacam, you can continue for another kilometre to the Col de Tramassel for an even better view. Worthwhile!
Een behoorlijke beuker! Niet heel lang, maar het gebrek aan regelmaat, maakt deze klim zwaar. Soms loopt de weg even naar beneden, maar staat er langs de weg dat de komende kilometer 10 procent gemiddeld is. Dan weet je dat het even verderop pittig gaat worden! Als je bovenop de Hautacam bent, kun je voor een nog mooier uitzicht nog een kilometer doorfietsen naar de Col de Tramassel. De moeite waard!
A climb with two faces: beautiful, almost idyllic by small quiet typical Pyrenean villages with nice views and the continuous sound of streams and cowbells around you, and at the same time: hellish by the extreme alternation of flat parts (even sometimes downhill) and then suddenly steep walls which you have to climb. This climb offers nothing, but then absolutely nothing in terms of rhythm. You have the feeling your legs are playing tricks on you; one moment you think you're Riis who rode up here on the outside blade, the next moment comparisons with Evans in the Giro 2002 or Ulrich at Les-Deux-Alpes in 1998 pop up. Your Garmin is your only hope for resignation in this: the climb is simply that unpredictable, as the numbers on your display show. Another reassurance: the really steep parts are short and there is always hope for less steep parts. With that in mind, I would start this climb and then hopefully you can especially enjoy the beautiful surroundings. By the way, after the Tour-finish (large parking lot) you should definitely ride to the Tramassal; significantly less steep and very nice views.
Een klim met twee gezichten: prachtig, bijna idyllisch door kleine stille typische Pyreneeën-dorpjes met mooie uitzichten en het continue geluid van beekjes en koeienbellen om je heen, en tegelijk: hels door de extreme afwisseling van vlakke stukken (zelfs af en toe weer naar beneden) en dan opeens steile muren waar je tegenop moet. Deze klim biedt niets, maar dan ook helemaal niets qua ritme. Continu heb je het gevoel dat je benen je foppen; het ene moment waan je jezelf als Riis die hier op het buitenblad naar boven reed, het andere moment komen vergelijkingen met Evans in de Giro 2002 of Ulrich op Les-Deux-Alpes in 1998 naar boven. Je Garmin is de enige hoop op berusting hierin: de klim is nu eenmaal zo grillig blijkt uit de cijfers op je display. Een andere geruststelling: de echt steile stukken zijn kort en er gloort altijd weer hoop op minder steile stukken. Met dat in het achterhoofd zou ik deze klim aanvatten en dan hopelijk kan je vooral genieten van de prachtige omgeving. Trouwens, na de Tour-finish (grote parkeerplaats) zeker doorrijden naar de Tramassal; beduidend minder steil en heel mooi uitzicht.

The route with good tarmac initially meanders narrowly between the houses of several small villages to finally turn into a series of curves in an open uninhabited green mountain landscape with overwhelming views of the wide valley of the Gave de Pau with your starting town. The climb is long and gruelling as it has very irregular gradients. Even within one kilometre there can be a huge variation, which doesn't help your climbing rhythm. The typical cycling info signs (distance to top/actual altitude/％ next km.) and the climbfinder graph sometimes give a distorted view.
Because the Tour finish line is a summer parking lot at skilifts at 1520m, cycling for 1,5 km. to the end of the road at the highest point the Col du Tramassel (1635m) was a must for the incomparable panorama,

De route met prima asfalt kronkelt aanvankelijk nauw tussen de huizen van meerdere kleine dorpjes om uiteindelijk over te gaan in een serie bochten in een open onbewoond groen berglandschap met overweldigend uitzicht op de brede vallei van de Gave de Pau met je vertrekstadje. De klim is lang en slopend omdat hij zeer onregelmatige stijgingspercentages heeft. Zelfs binnen één kilometer kan er een enorme variatie zijn,wat je klimritme niet ten goede komt. De typische fietsinfobordjes (afstand tot top/actuele hoogte/％ volgende km.) en de climbfinder grafiek geven soms vertekend beeld.
Omdat de Tour finishlijn een zomers verlaten parkeerplaats bij skilifen is op 1520 m, was 1,5 km. doorfietsen naar het einde van de weg op het hoogste punt de Col du Tramassel (1635m) een aanrader voor het weergaloos panorama,
een klein café op de top en veel schapen op en langs de weg.

After a marathon trip over the Soulor and the Aubisque Hautacam started. This hellish climb was a real battle of attrition. The climb is nowhere regular, making it hard to find a good rhythm. The steep parts seem endless and follow each other in quick succession. If you have some left in the tank, don't forget to ride up to the top of Col de Tramassel. Short, tough, ruthless climb, but again a must-do!
Na een marathontocht over onder andere de Soulor en de Aubisque Hautacam aangevangen. Deze helse klim was een ware slijtageslag. De beklimming is nergens regelmatig, waardoor je erg moeilijk een goed ritme vindt. De steile stukken lijken eindeloos en volgen bovendien elkaar snel op. Als je nog iets in de tank hebt, vergeet dan niet een kilometer verder naar boven te rijden, naar de top van Col de Tramassel. Korton, pittige, meedogenloze klim, maar opnieuw een must-do!
Nice but very irregular climb. Sometimes sections of 4％ followed by sections of 14％. The last kilometre we had to walk between the cows. The view at the top was beautiful. You can also combine this with a ride on the toboggan run at the top, which is also fun.
Mooie maar zeer onregelmatige klim. Soms stroken van 4％ gevolgd door stroken van 14％. De laatste kilometer laverend tussen de koeien door. Het uitzicht op de top was prachtig. Eventueel te combineren met een ritje op de rodelbaan op de top, ook leuk.

At the top it was cold and I brought extra clothes for the descent but not enough.
It is a calf biter, difficult because of the variable strips, cost me effort.
Inderdaad pittige klim, met zware stroken, goed wegdek van begin tot einde.
Vanaf 1000m hoogte in de mist en nevel gereden, op de top lichte neerslag,
de laatste km moeten laveren tussen paarden en schapen op het wegdek.
Op de top was het koud had extra kleren mee voor de afdaling maar te weinig.
Het is een kuitenbijter, moeilijk door de variabele stroken, heeft me moeite gekost.
Spicy climb with lots of variation. Largely in the fog / clouds rode. The top was beautiful in the sun. Special sensation. Good road surface to the top.
Pittige klim met veel variatie. Grotendeels in de mist/wolken gereden. De top lag prachtig in het zonnetje. Bijzondere gewaarwording. Goed wegdek tot aan de top.
Sunday 23-9 climbed the Hautacam. Beautiful!!! The many 'updated' asphalt spots with loose grit was a bit irritating, but I'm sure that gets less soon. Save at least some energy for the 1200m to the col de Trameassel, you should really do that!
Zondag 23-9 de Hautacam beklommen. Prachtig!! De vele 'bijgewerkte' asfalt plekken met los grit was wat irritant, maar dat wordt vast snel minder. Bewaar in iedergeval wat energie voor de 1200m naar de col de Trameassel, dat moet je echt nog ff doen!!
Climbed the Col de Tramassel today. The top was covered in fog and unfortunately no bar was open at the top. A tough climb!
Vandaag beklommen en de Col de Tramassel er achteraan. De top dik in de mist en helaas geen kroegje open boven. Pittige klim!

A beautiful day last week in the Pyrenees. With our group that had signed up for climbing for life, we cycled from Luz Saint Sauveur to Argelés d'Agost. From there, we did the 30km climb to Soulor and Aubisque. 2 beautiful typical pyrenean cols. After the descent towards Argelés we had something to eat. I decided with 2 comrades to take the Hautacam 'as dessert'. The sun was still out in full force. So we headed for the foot of the Hautacam. What a heavy climb this is. High average percentages and oh so irregular. Nowhere, but nowhere do you get the right rhythm. It is constantly changing gears and walking on the pedals ... A real beast!!!! Een stralende dag vorige week in de pyreneeen. Met ons groepje dat ingeschreven was voor climbing for life zijn we van Luz Saint Sauveur richting Argelés d'Agost gefietst. Van daaruit hebben we de 30km lange klim naar Soulor en Aubisque gedaan. 2 prachtige typische pyreneeen cols. Na de afdaling richting Argelés en daar ff iets te eten. Heb ik met 2 kameraden beslist om de Hautacam er 'als dessert' bij te pakken. De zon was nog steeds overvloedig van de partij. Dus wij richting voet Hautacam. Wat een loodzware klim is dit. Hoge gemiddelde percentages en o zo onregelmatig. Nergens, maar dan ook nergens kom je in het goede ritme. Het is constant bijschakelen en op de pedalen lopen... Een echt beest!!!!
