My favourite ascent to the Feldberg is via Oberems, Seelenberg and Schmitten (even if the beautiful descent from Seelenberg to Schmitten hurts because you have to go all the way back up again). The climb is varied and only gets steep in the last section from Sandplacken; you also have a beautiful view of the summit and thus the destination in front of your eyes.... read more

A nice, steady climb! When you see the towers of the Feldberg in the distance for the first time after a few kilometres, you wonder how it can be so long.
From the traffic lights and the right turn at Sandplacken, it gets really tough.
At the top, however, you can take a short rest and the descent is excellent.

Having climbed the Feldberg from Niederems, we descended to Schmitten to ride it up again along this even slope. There was reasonable traffic but now not to be annoying either. Personally, I do like an even climb like this. You find a good pace and you can keep that up to the top. Although you may have to adjust your speed in the last few kilometres as they are significantly harder.

It might also be interesting to mention that I descended the Feldberg to Schmitten via Siegfriedstrasse and Kellerbornsweg. The latter is a godforsaken street with a road surface like a billiard cloth, where no cars drive and also ends up in Schmitten. This stretch is a lot more fun to do as an ascent. But then again, you only know that afterwards, of course. So if you're in the area, definitely check out this alternative. By the way, the photo was taken on that Kellerbornsweg.

I found this climb harder than the ballon d' Alsace.
Beginning much traffic. Somewhere in a center, no idea of the name. It looked like it was flat and yet we hardly got ahead. When we looked back we saw how steep it was. Many parking places along the way, ideal for the follow car.
