A wonderful, difficult climb that I did on a gravel bike with 30-34 gearing. The climb starts at around 500 m from Conthey in the Valais vineyards that go up to about 900m, then treed area till about 1800m and then alpine cow-occupied meadows above the tree line to 2247m at the top of the Col. It is not a climb for the faint-hearted with 5-15% grades, some tunnels and some traffic but well worth it for the views, the flowers and the mountain peaks. You even see a glacier at the top. I took my lunch and a celebratory drink at the restaurant continuing on from the Col by the cable car (15 CHF for a senior one-way and 9 CHF for my bike) which I took to Gsteig and then turned west to do the Col de Pillon (1546 m) and ended the day by the grand castle in Aigle. Fabulous day - 70 km and 2225 m all in from Conthey to Col de Sanetsch to Gsteig to Col de Pillon to Aigle. A must do.

The Col du Sanetsch is a beautiful climb that really rivals more famous siblings of similar altitude in France. This variant starts off quite tough, or I just had bad legs myself. After a while, though, you get into a nice rhythm. The middle section has some short walls that go above 10%. After that, it's easy going all the way to the top. Don't forget a tail light as you will encounter another fairly long tunnel here. This climb is not necessarily very steep, it is especially long at 24 kilometres. The last 7 kilometres the views become spectacular and you really drive through a rocky moonscape. On the other side, you can descend a bit to a small lake.
Pro-tip: past that little lake, you can take your bike down the cable car where today you can go up the Col du Pillon. You can then do the Sanetsch in a round trip.

A long trek through different landscapes (plain, vineyards, forest and finally alpine pastures). Bring refreshments and lights for better visibility in the long daba tunnel.

There is some traffic, but it remains manageable. The road surface is generally fine, although there is one tunnel where the lighting is a bit poorer-a bike light would be useful there. If you ride all the way to the end of the route, you can stop at a restaurant for something to eat or drink. All in all, a fine climb!
