Contrairement à son homonyme de l'Oisans, c'est un petit col (et un passage obligé) quand on parcourt l'intégralité du Balcon de Belledonne.
On peut choisir également d'y accéder à partir de bien plus bas, en partant de Brignoud, dans la vallée du Grésivaudan, et en passant par Laval, mais en général les cyclistes partant de la vallée préfèrent obliquer vers le col des Mouilles, un peu plus haut en altitude.
