In June 2023 I chose this climbing option from the various possible routes to the Col des Saisies because it was perfectly combinable from Beaufort with the Col de Joly as the initial section is identical. You start via the well-known Cormet de Roselend to turn it sharply left fairly quickly (D70) and climb out of Beaufort via some tough hairpin turns. On an open valley flank, the route continues with gentle curves uphill to arrive in picturesque Hauteluce after a downhill followed by 3 climbin... read more

Ascent done at 27 June'25 together with the ascent of Cormet de Roselend from B-S-M. Weather conditions: +/- 29 degrees. Did not do the climb via Signal Bisanne but via Col Du Joly. This col is about 16 km long and is certainly not to be underestimated. It is a tough climb and especially if you have already climbed Cormet de Roselend. You have already conquered more than 1000 altimeters and then another 1000 altimeters are added. During my climb, they were getting everything ready in Les Saisies for the TDF'25. It is a very beautiful and lively ski resort. And the climb is also quite something.

From May to the end of September, the Col des Saisies is in fact a DANGER, because of the motorcyclists who take the road to this pass for a circuit, without worrying about cyclists and other road users. Several more or less serious accidents occur every summer due to the irresponsible driving of these motorcyclists.

A very nice, fairly steady climb, on a quiet road with a sometimes uneven surface. The view of Mont Blanc after Hauteluce, when you rejoin the main road, gives you added motivation to finish the climb.

On an open valley flank, the route continues with gentle curves uphill to arrive in picturesque Hauteluce after a downhill followed by 3 climbing hairpins.
Here you should definitely cycle through the authentic village centre!
Afterwards, you end up on the D218 B, wide road without extreme % with perfect asphalt, thus joining another route (Col des Saisies from Villard sur Doron ) for the last combined 7 km to the summit. The white-yellow bike info posts then appear every kilometre along the roadside, and because this panoramic route is part of the "Route des Grandes Alpes" there is busier tourist traffic.
Your final destination comes into view from afar. Via roundabout you end up on the ascending central main street straight through the summer-quiet ski village that was venue for cross-country skiing and biathlon disciplines during the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.... Once you pass under the wooden arch, across the road, you reach the plateau of the summit with extensive parking, ski facilities, and the beautiful church (the name alone: Chapelle Notre Dame de Haute Lumière).

Nice climb if you combine with the Col du Joly.
If only the Col des Saisies is your goal, I would personally opt for the route from Villard sur Doron via the wonderfully quiet D123, where you can also pick up Signal de Bisanne.

Nice climb. The first 2/3 km are quite steep, especially if you start without warming up. After Hauteluce the slope is rather regular. If you do the same route downhill be careful after Hauteluce the road is rather bad.

Very pleasant climb with very nice views once you reach Hauteluce. An accessible climb that becomes slightly harder once you reach the main road to Les Saisies (D218B). Not much traffic (much less than on the D128B from Villard-sur-Doron). It's a very good alternative to reach Les Saisies :-)
