In my opinion, the most beautiful climb in the area. A large part of it is open country, with beautiful scenery (views of Lac Chambon and Murol castle, then the peaks surrounding the pass). Very good surface, fairly even slopes, less traffic than the Croix Morand.

I prefer the mythical roads of the Saint Robert for me the car sport journalist (in real life), place of the mythical car climb (hence the footbridge at the foot of the pass and the walls of tyres that you see in August). Several sides and options if you are from the area, notably the one via Murol direct with almost 20 km of hump and a really hard foot, then a long valley via the sublime Chaudefour valley after passing the Rocher de l'Aigle, then the common part that I did last week;I did it again last week, I only met two tourists on a VAE and not one cyclist, the guys preferring the Croix Morand which is easier (a motorway in summer), the plateau at the top is just great with the view on the Lac Chambon below and the Sancy in front. The Versant Mont Dore is also really nice although more regular and steep, the Tour passed there in 2011.
Je préfère les routes mythiques du Saint Robert pour moi le journaliste sport auto (dans la vraie vie), lieu de la mythique montée auto (d'où la passerelle au pied du col et les murs de pneus que vous voyez en aout). Plusieurs versant et option quand on est du coin, notamment celle par Murol directe avec presque 20 bornes de bosse et un pied vraiment dur puis une longue vallée via la sublime vallée de Chaudefour après avoir passé le Rocher de l'Aigle, puis la partie commune que j'ai refaite la semaine dernière, je n'ai croisé que deux touristes en VAE sinon pas un cycliste, les mecs préférant la Croix Morand plus facile (une autoroute en été), le plateau au sommet est juste super avec la vue sur le Lac Chambon en bas et le Sancy en face. Le Versant Mont Dore est aussi vraiment sympa quoique plus régulier et pentu, le Tour y est passé en 2011.
A pleasant climb with beautiful scenery, moderate difficulty, good road conditions and little traffic. Perfect for a mountain beginner like me.

Nice climb and certainly not too difficult. Every turn a nice view of the lake. Descent to Mont Dore became busier near the village. Was I think something to do. Gave a bald piece of tire but yes. Can happen.

Nice climb with little traffic. From the campsite always a nice view, of course only in good weather. There are two places to eat or drink. One if you go up and one if you go down towards Mont Dore. At the latter we have paused. Mathijs, hope we are not describing the same place, because our experiences are the opposite. Then back to Chambon sur Lac via the Croix Morand. A more even climb, but because of the trees no view until almost the top. We also cycled up the Croix Morand from Chambon sur Lac. Personally, I find that the most beautiful climb. It has almost the same gradient over the whole distance without a single flat spot or descent. During the entire climb you can enjoy fantastic views. So both cols together an absolute must. And Monte Dore is a nice place to enjoy a moment on a terrace.
Mooie klim met weinig verkeer. Vanaf de camping altijd een mooi uitzicht, natuurlijk alleen bij goed weer. Er zijn twee gelegenheden om iets te eten of te drinken. Eentje als je omhoog gaat en eentje als je omlaag gaat richting Mont Dore. Bij de laatste hebben wij gepauzeerd. Vriendelijke mensen met goed spul.Mathijs, hoop dat we niet dezelfde gelegenheid beschrijven, want onze ervaringen zijn tegengesteld. Vervolgens terug naar Chambon sur Lac via de Croix Morand. Een klim die gelijkmatiger verloopt, maar vanwege de bomen geen uitzicht tot bijna aan de top. We hebben die Croix Morand ook opgefietst vanuit Chambon sur Lac. Persoonlijk vind ik dat de mooiste klim. Deze heeft over de gehele afstand vrijwel hetzelfde stijgingspercentage zonder ook maar een vlak stukje of daling. Gedurende de gehele klim geniet je van een fantastisch uitzicht. Dus beide cols samen een absolute aanrader. En ook Monte Dore is een leuk plaatsje om even te genieten op een terras.
Climb done this morning from Murol. It was my first col ever, so I have no reference. The road surface was super though, as well as the crowds. Three cars, two motorcyclists and 16 cyclists. Winding up, the view was tremendously beautiful on the lake where you first pass. In short, from my side, an absolute must!
Klim vanochtend gedaan vanuit Murol. Het was mijn eerste col ooit, dus ik heb geen referentie. Het wegdek was echter super, alsmede de drukte. Drie auto's, twee motorrijders en 16 fietsers. Kronkelend omhoog was het uitzicht enorm mooi op het meer waar je eerst langsfietst. Kortom vanuit mijn kant een absolute aanrader!
Delicious climb. Last holiday 2 times done. Do not eat at the hostel about 2.5 km below the top. Unfriendly people who you prefer to quickly out of the case if you have children with you ... and so we left to somewhere else delicious to eat. The climb is really great and becomes fantastically beautiful after the pieces where you occasionally have to descend (a few hundred meters)
Heerlijke klim. Afgelopen vakantie 2 keer gedaan. Ga vooral niet eten bij het herbergde op zo'n 2,5 km onder de top. Onvriendelijke mensen die je het liefst snel weer de zaak uitwerken als je kinderen bij je hebt... en dus zijn we vertrokken om ergens anders heerlijk te eten. De klim loopt echt heerlijk en wordt fantastisch mooi na de stukjes waar je af en toe ook even moet dalen (paar honderd meter)
