From a landscape point of view, it is one of the highlights of the south of France. Fortunately, nowhere steeper than 8% so you can look around and enjoy, but it is long. And continuous! Very nice climb, where for a long time you see the beautiful village of Roubion in the distance. You know that it is still far and that there are still many altimeters to cover, if you take this village as a reference.
After Roubion, you have to climb another 5KM, after which you are at the top.
That last 5KM I was chased by a swarm of flies, so I started pedalling just a bit too hard and could no longer enjoy the climb very much.
Very beautiful climb, on slopes that are not difficult but steady. In the lower part and all the way down Roubion can be very hot. I climbed the Couillole as part of a long loop tour and started the ascent at around 10am at the end of June. Terribly hot, the canyon in the first half is an oven in places, you can breathe from 1500/1600 metres up. Roubion is a real gem, if you are not in a hurry stop and enter the village, it is worth it... and there is a crank fountain of very fresh water.
I approached via Gorges Cian (simply wonderful) but decided to descend to St Sav Tinee- descent is quite technical but stunning and you get glimpses of route ahead. But the ascent back really surprised me: it’s beautiful, steady, virtually empty and keeps you guessing with ever changing views, scenery and twists and turns! Much better than I expected
The Tour 2024 has come and gone. They have good taste.
This climb is beautiful and varied enough. Not too long, not too short, not too painful, not too easy. It's a good climb.
You find your rhythm. Some sections of the road have been restored, no doubt for the Tour de France. Otherwise, it's in very good condition for the climb, but on the descent, the unevenness is clearly felt.
The red rocks, the forest, the hilltop village of Roubion, all kinds of bends - a lot of great ingredients that make this pass stand out.
An imposing bicycle sculpture made of giant chain links marks the pass. What a great bike!
The descent is a killer! Or rather an absolute joy! Mind you, it's technical and bumpy over the last four kilometres.
A must do! Of course.
Le Tour 2024 est passé par là. Ils ont bon goût.
Cette ascension est belle et assez variée. Ni trop longue, ni trop courte, ni trop douloureuse, ni trop facile.
From St Saveur de Tinee climbed the col . Smooth climb and very quiet in terms of traffic and cycling (I rode 9-9-2024).
The views are really great and I counted four short tunnels. You can diesel up this mountain wonderfully without being taken out of your rhythm by big differences in peintes.
After the summit, we continued on via Beuil to Valberg. That is also a beautiful stretch with beautiful glowing alpine meadows. In Valberg, you can have a good meal or drink at a square with many restaurants.
A superb climb, admittedly the surface is not top notch, but the road is narrow and winding, with very little traffic, a slope that is neither too gentle nor too steep and above all constant. From then on, you can keep your pace until the top. I highly recommend it.
