Nice climb and the road surface is fine. Plenty of traffic up to Cauterets, but after that it's thankfully not as bad. You cycle through rugged nature and pass several waterfalls. The last few kilometres are tough. You finish at the large car park with access to the Pyrenees National Park. Is definitely worth a visit.
Mooie beklimming en het wegdek is prima. Tot Cauterets genoeg verkeer, maar daarna valt dat gelukkig mee. Je fietst door ruige natuur en je passeert enkele watervallen. De laatste kilometers hakken er wel in. Je eindigt op de grote parkeerplaats met toegang tot het Nationaal Park van de Pyreneeën. Is zeker een bezoek waard.

Climbed on a weekday in June. Beautiful climb past many waterfalls and the cosy town of Cauterets where you can have an excellent lunch. A large car park with a visitor centre and a gondola awaits at the top. Unfortunately, to see the bridge you have to leave your bike behind and walk quite a distance. Unfortunately no lock with you so we'll just have to go back.
Op een doordeweekse dag in juni beklommen. Mooie beklimming langs vele watervallen en het gezellige plaatsje Cauterets waar je uitstekend kunt lunchen. Boven wacht een grote parkeerplaats met bezoekerscentrum en een gondel. Om de brug te zien moet je helaas je fiets achterlaten en nog een flink stuk lopen. Helaas geen slot mee dus dan maar weer terug.

Adembenemend mooie klim langs de watervallen. Je komt uiteindelijk aan op een parkeerplaats, hier kan je nog een paar kilometer verder door fietsen, dit wordt uiteindelijke een gravelpad maar is wel te doen op een racefiets, en door een erg mooie omgeving.

Weer een klim die wat mij betreft iets te laag is gewaardeerd op deze site. Oké, het einde is een mega parkeerterrein. Maar doe je de klim niet juist voor de reis naar de top? En die is geweldig mooi. Lekker door de bossen, een paar mooie haarspeldbochten, soms wat leuke uitzichten.
You should cycle on past the ridiculously large parking lot. Left of the plateau at the end of it, there's an asphalted footpad, which you can cycle - zig-zagging around people walking - to the bridge/restaurant where there's a col marker and a spectacular view on the cascading waterfalls.

De grote parking op het einde van de klim zorgt voor een anti climax.
De echte Pont d' Espagne brug is enkel te voet bereikbaar.
Sommige dagen van de zomervakantie toeristisch heel druk verkeer inclusief autocars, omdat het eindpunt een populaire excursiebestemming is vanuit het bedevaartsoord Lourdes en ook een vertrekpunt van vele bergtochten.
Desondanks een mooie opwarmingsklim (zeker tweede deel) voor steviger fietswerk in de regio.

Tsja, je bent hier niet alleen. Toch is het stuk naar Cauterets wel mooi door een kloof met de beek onder je. Vanaf Cauterets alles wat een mooie klim nodig heeft: haarspeldbochten, goed wegdek, bos, rotspartijen en watervallen. Ik reed hem in de ochtend in juli 2020 en toen was het vrij rustig met verkeer. Dat zal gezien de grote parkeerplaats boven later op de dag wel anders zijn. Helaas geen uitzicht boven. Die steilste 100m van 23％ heb ik niet gemerkt. Lijkt me onzin.

Last holiday we cycled several times to Cauterets. Once up to Pont d'Espagne and several times in between up to the village of Cauterets. A nice climb with a bit of 'hard work' at the hairpin bends. And then the reward: a wonderful descent as a toboggan run. One of the best descents I have ever ridden!
Afgelopen vakantie meerdere keren naar Cauterets gefietst. Eén keer tot aan Pont d'Espagne en nog een aantal keren als tussendoortje tot aan het dorp Cauterets. Lekker lopende klim met even een stukje 'hard werken' bij de haarspeldbochten. En daarna de beloning: een heerlijke afdaling als een rodelbaan. Een van de leukste afdalingen die ik ooit gereden heb!
Yesterday we drove to the center of Cauterets from Soulom. This is a real runner on super smooth asphalt. The first km's it was not difficult for me to stay above 20 km/hour. In the middle part it becomes 10% and a number of hairpin turns follow each other quickly. After that a short descent and then about 3 km at 4, 5%. Back it is a super steep descent.
Gisteren als afsluiter nog even naar het centrum van Cauterets gereden vanuit Soulom. Dit is een echte loper op superstrak asfalt. De eerste km's was het voor mij niet moeilijk om boven de 20 km/uur te blijven. In het middengedeelte wordt het 10% en volgen een aantal haarspeldbochten elkaar snel op. Daarna even iets dalen en dan nog ca. 3 km a 4, 5%. Terug is het een superlopende afdaling.
