I'm no mountain goat, but I'm still pleased to have conquered this climb on Ascension weekend. Apart from a few short sections, the road condition is good to very good. The landscape is very beautiful despite the major changes caused by bark beetles and climate change. Up to Schierke, being overtaken by one or two motorcyclists was a particular challenge. From Schierke onwards, the route was the big challenge for me. There were also numerous hikers on the route that weekend, which meant I had to be careful on the descent.

Attractive ride in two acts to northern Germany's highest peak. From Wernigerode, you first drive along a beautiful wooded but at times busy road. I rode this ride on an early Saturday morning in July. Before Drei Annen Hohne, it goes steep for a while, but then you get to Schierke without much effort. From there you ride a meandering route through beautiful countryside on a spotless, wide and car-free service road. Occasionally you cross the steam railway or the former GDR Kolonnenweg. Towards the end (about 2km before the summit), numerous hiking trails and cycling or mtb routes converge on the service road and it can get a bit crowded there. Especially the last stretch is also steep, so there you go wobbling between pedestrians. Maximum speed (when descending) is 30km and I find that already on the hard side. There is plenty to do and eat at the summit, and in good weather you can see the whole of Germany (i.e. the northern half) stretching into the depths. Bring a jacket, it can be inclement there and considerably cooler than down.

From Wernigerode first approx. 15km on quite busy road, without cycle lane. But beautiful. After Schierke it is forbidden for cars's and it becomes wonderfully quiet and beautiful route. Last part quite tough. Hikers were indeed there, but not bothered by them.

Vanuit Wernigerode eerst ong. 15km over vrij drukke weg, zonder fietsstrook.

No traffic after the halfway point. From late morning the top 2 miles or so are full of walkers/tourists who think they own the road making it difficult for cyclists. But it's a good climb with coffee and food available at the top.
