A nice alternative to the classic ascent via the L86. Coming from Oberachern (south-west), the start is at the entrance to Lauf, at the sports ground car park. From there, turn east onto the small Aubachweg road, then onto Waldstrasse (there are other variants; this is the obvious one). The road is fairly narrow but the surface is good. The gradient is fairly steep (9 to 11%), but less demanding than the L86. In the morning, this road is rather shady, which is pleasant on a hot day. The views... read more

The views over the vineyards and valley are superb.
After around 4km and 330m of ascent, you rejoin the main road (L86) at Bischenberg. This is followed by another 300m of steep ascent (up to 12%) to the plateau at 810m (Grasshohe). You reach the Scharzwaldhochstrasse at around 900m. From here, you can either quickly turn left onto the forest road to climb up to Kleine Grinde (which I always do, as it gives you an almost direct ascent), or you can continue to Mummelsee (1030m) before climbing up to Hornisgrinde (in which case the flat spot on the plateau at 900m is longer and gives you a chance to rest).

A very nice climb. First through some villages, then through the forest and ending on a clear hill. I did have bad weather, but you seem to have a nice view
