I also discovered this part of the Eifel around Heimbach. Around the Ruhrsee, there are very nice climbs to negotiate, with percentages varying between 3-10%. A bit of South Limburg, then, without any real extreme peaks. Only where in South Limburg almost everything is between 1-2 km, here you will find climbs of 3-8 km length. It may only be 4% once in a while, but if it lasts 5km, you will really feel it. The unpredictability also takes its toll, you are constantly shifting gears to find a nice rhythm. It is a beautiful area with hairpin bends to savour. What struck me most was the discipline of the drivers. They go well around you and if there is an oncoming car they neatly wait behind you until there is room.

I now have some experience of the Rureifel, i.e. Heimbach and the surrounding area. The roads are perfect almost everywhere, routes can almost always be planned to avoid the busy roads and if that is really not possible, there is often a (fine) cycle path. On weekdays, outside the holidays, you have the roads largely to yourself, with the exception of a sporadic motorcyclist here and there. The traffic is friendly, quiet and careful (as always abroad).

However, I see a lot of signs saying 'prohibited for motorbikes in the weekend or 'in the evening': that doesn't bode well for the holidays and nice weekends...
