Annoying that it's in the center of Leuven. Although a large part of Leuven is cycling streets, it's not advisable for the sportive cyclist to ride through here. But the Wijnpers is a good reason to do so anyway. Known from the GP Jef (Poeske) Scherens and the World Cup 2021. Quite steep. But just short enough to continue.

I rarely ride on it because it's in the center of town but it's a famous climb of the great prize winner Jozef Scherens, the seven times world champion in the sprint on the track and coming from Werchter, who later moved to Leuven after his marriage. It's a nice climb in terms of gradient and it's narrow which I like because it gives more of a climbing feeling. Certainly not worth a detour unless you want to know where the riders have to go.
P.s. Jozef Scheren had a plane and he was not only an acrobat on his bike but also with his plane because he flew under the old bridge of Werchter and between the locks to the amusement of the locals. The airport was situated at the lake of Keerbergen ( hence the streetname Vlieghavenlaan at the lake ) and in the past several professional teams trained at that lake like Ijsboerke with Van Springel and Godefrood but also Renault Gitane with Bernard Hinault because it was car-free. These riders stayed in the castle of Keerbergen and the eifenaar Paul Peeters ( alias Polleke frit ) had a café-restaurant-friterie at the bridge with the sluices in Werchter and was a neighbour of Jozef Scherens ( poeske Scherens ) .
