There are various climbs from Old Amersham to Amersham on the Hill, and this is the hardest one. It can feel pretty brutal towards the end of a long ride. I think it's worth a detour, especially if your options are Station Road or Stanley Hill, which are a bit trafficky and a bit dull by comparison. Don't underestimate the steepness though. Thankfully, it's not very long. Rectory Hill climbs through trees, having started at the old Market House in Old Amersham, an interesting historic building, and also passes the church, so there's some historic and scenic interest on the way up.
