Any cycling enthusiast always talks about the San Lorenzo pass as one of the toughest mountain passes in Asturias, although it is necessary to distinguish between its two sides, as the side from San Martín de Teverga is more demanding than the one from La Riera, although both are tough.
The ascent begins with slopes of around 9-10%, and peaks of 14-15%, which go up the slope with several horseshoe bends that give this stretch a very beautiful alpine look for the first 3 kilometres. At Las Morteras the gradient eases off and there is soon a short break to get ready for the central part of the climb, which is undoubtedly the hardest part of the climb.
For another 3 kilometres the average gradient exceeds 10% and on reaching Orderías the maximum ramps reach 14-15%.
Once this toughest part of the pass is over, we have practically completed the most demanding part of the ascent and another gentle stretch helps us to recover to face the last part with gradients of 9-10% again. With this last attack we managed to overcome this demanding ascent to the San Lorenzo pass on the west side from the Somiedo council.

Beautiful climb in the north of Spain . This 10 km long climb has been the setting of cycling races several times in the past . In 2019 during the round of Spain they rode over it . The climb is very erratic and it is an alternation of very steep gradients up to 16% followed by less steep stretches even slightly downhill.
The climb consists mostly of double figures but nowhere are these strips longer than 3 km and so the average cyclist can regularly find some respite. The scenery is fantastic with on the way and on top of the small parking lot a beautiful view on the many Puertos in the neighborhood. The fauna would be the most fantastic and diverse of all Spain. This col is also situated in the Somiedo nature park of Cantabria. If you are in the area don't miss it and the road surface is very good.
