The nicest route is to combine it with the Col du Néronne, but this side is also doable. The steepest last kilometres are really tough, you really hesitate whether to dismount or not to get over this. The last hairpin feels like 20%, but once you get over that you have the toughest part behind you.

The first 9km very even where you can pedal a nice cadence. The last 2.5km are very tough but the views soften the conditions. A beautiful road surface and very little car traffic. At the top you can have a drink and snack. Highly recommended!

Aanrader!

Done from Salers too (second half identical to this profile). The pass is very irregular with an easy passage through the col de Néronne. For the final part, beware of the average percentage which is very misleading. My gps announced 18% at the steepest and I think they are there. The last 2.5 km are really hard, constantly above 12% except in the only flat bend if you go wide. A must do if you have the legs or like me a tourist gear (34x34). The blueberry pie at the top was very welcome. The other sides are easier.

In my case, I climbed from Salers, over the col de Neronne to the Puy Mary. If green is not your color then this is not the place to be. The volcanic rock will have ensured that the flora thrives here and the cows give the perfect milk from which the AOP du Cantal and Salers cheeses are made. I climb it with a good rhythm. As far as I am concerned, it is a must to really stop. For example in the descent to Murat at a local cheese vendor where you can buy a piece.
