climb of medium difficulty without extreme peaks in gradient but always between 9 and 10% you leave Mendrisio and then into the forest and travel in parallel with the railway to the top of the Generous Mountain.
Ridden this climb in October. Definitely worthwhile for the autumn colours alone. You pass 2 small villages with regular clear views over the valley. Then the road winds into the forest and the views diminish. Climb is fairly constant and asphalt is of reasonable quality.
Besides the first 500m, it is an easy climb. Very low traffic, lots of forest so it is not too hot. Pavement is bad for going down and there is really no view with a road bike, but it is still a fun climb.

You do not actually reach the summit of Monte Generoso, but stop at around 1,200 metres above sea level where a dirt road to Bellavista with the cog railway station begins. A small asphalted road leads to a panoramic ridge overlooking the Mendrisiotto and the province of Varese. The climb begins at the roundabout in Via Industria (climb of the "acquafresca" made in the 2008 World Cycling Championships) and attacks hard (over 10% to the junction for Salorino. In the hamlet the gradients soften, but as soon as the town is over, the climb begins again at 7-8% to Somazzo. After leaving this hamlet there are still 7km to go before the end of the climb, we enter the woods and at the railway cogwheel track the gradients become hard (10-12%) for significant stretches. The climb remains regular in its hardness, with a good road surface and rather narrow sections that make it difficult to overtake cars. The slope softens in the last 300-400m at the beginning of the car park. There are several fountains along the route: 1 is at Somazzo in the one-way section regulated by traffic lights, 1 near the railway station and 1 more or less halfway up the summit car park on the right (for those going uphill). Deserving ascent
Very beautiful climb with a hard start. Constant intensity up to the summit with no breaks in rhythm. Asphalt more treacherous on the descent than on the ascent. Tackled on a public holiday so with fairly heavy vehicular traffic.
Tough and long climb. It never leaves you breathless. The view at the top is absent. You descend by the same route.
Salita dura e lunga. Non lascia mai respiro. Il panorama in cima è assente. Si scende dalla stessa strada.
The first four hairpin bends get your heart rate soaring immediately and leave you breathless. The middle section is rideable but the gradient never drops below 8% with many sections at 12/13%. The forest part is very cool, you can reach your own pace.
At the top you have to ditch the road bike and do a walking part.
An ascent to be made at least once, it proceeds fairly smoothly with gradients that keep the legs tense. You start in the village and slowly you are immersed in the forest, I recommend riding it in the morning in summer (for the coolness and to find less traffic).
The asphalt is well maintained, there are some viewpoints along the way, but in general the panorama is absent, you should take a dirt diversions to reach the belvedere.
