Nice quiet run-up , and from stockalp you don't have a moment's rest it stays above 10% suffering but it's worth it in the end when you get to the top.

Kevin sums it up well.

As an alternative to the somewhat boring first half, we climbed from Kerns via Flüeli-Ranft (past the beautiful Pax Montana hotel) along the Kernserstrasse and then on a deserted calm forest road with no cars. You then rejoin the main road at one of those typical wooden bridges just before the village of Melchtal. After the barrier and the traffic light at Stöckalp, the views get much better, the road surface worse, steeper and bumpier (not fun for the descent) and it's seriously gruelling.

At the top of the climb, don't forget to cycle on to Tannalp. Fine tarmac and almost no altimeters but more views of other mountains and a small reservoir. The descent back from Melchsee to Stöckalp is no fun. In June 2023, there was also a lot of gravel on repaired stretches of asphalt and in bends. After the barrier, the descent to Kerns is lovely.

I call this one a magnificent smash. The climb starts rather slowly from Sarnen/Kerns, but goes totally crazy from Stöckalp, where the percentages skyrocket, the (toll) road gets narrower and narrower and the world around you gets more beautiful by the minute. Be sure to drive a few kilometres further to Tannalp, it is definitely worth it!
