A quiet ascent with an air of the end of the world, in the highly confidential Montdenier massif. A deserted road, the likes of which I've rarely seen in France, linking only a few isolated houses. There are fine views of the Verdon gorges at the start.
Properly tarmacked up to Les Chauvets, the road becomes a stony track if you want to continue to Majastre (and cross the whole massif), although it retains its departmental status. This section was the inspiration for a film shot here, "Les naufragés de la D17".
If you have a mountain bike or gravel bike, I really recommend this crossing (road bikes please don't!!), the scenery is beautiful and a change of scenery, passing from Mediterranean forest to almost desert-like plateaux. The very winding descent after Majastre to Mézel is also fun. Don't forget to take plenty of water: there are no refreshments on the entire route, and the sun is beating down hard.
