The gorges at the start are known as the Petits Goulets. This climb used to be much more spectacular at the end, when it took in the authentic Grands Goulets, which are now inaccessible due to the high risk of landslides.
At the start of the climb, you'll pass through a few small tunnels where bike lighting isn't necessary, and you'll be promptly at the edge of the gorge. Then the climb continues and is never very difficult (I doubt the 9% posted). At the end you pass through a large 1.7km illuminated tunnel which has a bike lane on the way up, no lights needed, and it's nice and cool. Once you're at the top, all you can do is keep going uphill, either left to St Julien, or right to La Chapelle. The surface is very good and the road is generally wide. This is a rare gateway to the Vercors, but it's not particularly spectacular or difficult. A short distance away, you'll find the road to the Gorges de la Bourne, which is far more interesting.
