Excellent tarmac, beautiful unspoilt countryside alternating between hills and heathland, and up to the top steep. This is the most northerly of the Ardennes, the tip that passes into the Condroz/Famenne and so it has the best of both regions. There is no traffic nearby and once you cross the iron ledge you know you are already half way through the tough part. After that, it's just a matter of standing on the pedals, but above all enjoying yourself as the percentages drop. At the top, I went to the right to ride via the N899 so that I could descend the equally beautiful Chemin du Bois to Resteigne. Attention, the map at the top is not correct anymore, I think they have recently re-designed it: if you turn right from Les Alwins, you don't end up perpendicular to the N899 anymore, but you first have to make a turn to the left and to the right.
