Be sure to stop in Mogno for the beautiful little church by architetto Mario Botta!
Wonderful climb, the kind you won't forget
Very demanding especially from the end of Lake Sambuco, from here you won't breathe until the finish
Unique views with beautiful lakes and few people.
No possibility of refreshments on arrival (only small bar at Lake Sambuco). No fountains from here either
Start from Locarno. I found the Valle Maggia a bit boring in the first part. Next time I would bring the car closer to Cevio.
No possibilità di ristoro all'arrivo (solo piccolo bar al lago Sambuco).
You will rarely find them more beautiful!
In the first part, you cycle from village to village and are impressed by the violence that rises around you.
After Peccia, the hairpin bends appear at a rapid pace and seem to be one above the other.
Up to the first dam, the road surface is still perfect; then we switch to the real Italian roads.
Behind the dam, the misery really begins; the first stretch of 12% seems endless and cycling in the shade is not an option.
The 6% part is ideal to recover and to get ready for the magnificent final part of the climb.
The steepness is disguised by the views you have here. When you reach the lakes, you know that the end is near, but it doesn't get any less difficult.
At the top, you can cycle over both dams and take the most beautiful photos, the views are magnificent.
If you are in the neighbourhood, you should definitely do it, I was one and a half hours away, but I never regretted it for a moment.
A beautiful blind ascent, with a breathtaking panorama at the top, at an altitude of 2,300 metres, which will repay the great effort, especially in the last kilometres before reaching the Naret dam.
A highly recommended outing, also to enjoy the beautiful Maggia Valley, with a spectacular river and very little traffic. Be careful on the descent, as the asphalt is not exactly perfect at the top.
A climb that has everything: a challenging character (the final kilometres are really brutal) and a magisterial environment with nothing but beauty. Moreover, you will be rewarded at the top with a panorama you will never forget. This is a must, no doubt about it!
Nice climb, which I did from Ponte Brolla (near Lago Maggiore), adding an extra 25 km of climbing from about 260 metres altitude. The road surface is variable, sometimes good and new tarmac but the toughest kilometres from Lago del Sambuco the tarmac is poor. As it is a dead-end road that ends at a reservoir, it is a quiet road though. Beautiful scenery on the way from Valle Maggia, in Italian-speaking Switzerland.
