This is an alternative route for starting the climb up the Kleine Grinde via Sasbachwalden. Personally, I usually start the climb from Sasbachwalden itself. The first section of this alternative route begins in the vineyards, on a small, well-tarmacked road (Koenigsrainstrasse), with an initial gradient of 7 per cent which levels out asyou reach the junction with another small road that climbs to the right into the hills. Turn left straight on towards Sasbachwalden (see photo). For the rest of... read more

For the rest of the route, follow the standard route which climbs towards the B500 (Schwartzwaldhochstrasse). Between Sasbachwalden and an altitude of 800m, the gradients are steep (often around 10–11 per cent). This is followed by a flat section of about 1 km.
When you reach the B500, turn right and, 300 metres further on, take the forest road on the left which climbs towards the television mast. The barrier at the entrance to this forest road is sometimes closed, but it is easy to go round it, and cyclists are allowed to ride up. From there, continue to the summit plateau (7–8 per cent gradient), where the view is magnificent.
The road is in very good condition (slightly damaged in the final section).
Overall, the climb from Sasbachwalden to the Kleine Grinde is the most challenging road climb in the Black Forest.
A real classic for me. It’s every bit as good as many of the Alpine passes.
