The big hill of the Nordschleife, the northern loop of the Nürburgring, a giant circuit over 20km long, nicknamed "The Green Hell" (Grünne Hölle) by Jackie Stewart. Like the Nordschleife as a whole, this hill is unfortunately only accessible to cyclists on a few special occasions each year, the main one being the Rad am Ring, a major three-day cycling event held every year in July, which features several races, including the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
This long hill normally makes car engines suffer, but during the Rad am Ring it hurts the participating cyclists even more, especially on its last few hundred metres, at the place known as "Hohe Acht" (after the eponymous Eifel peak not far away), which are particularly steep, up to 17％. There are always cyclists turned pedestrians here!
La grande côte de la Nordschleife, la boucle nord du Nürburgring, circuit géant de plus de 20 km, surnommé « L'enfer vert » (green hell, grüne Hölle) par Jackie Stewart. Comme l'ensemble de la Nordschleife, cette côte n'est malheureusement accessible aux cyclistes que lors de quelques événéments particuliers, le principal étant le « Rad am Ring », grand rassemblement cycliste chaque année au mois de juillet, sur trois jours, et qui propose plusieurs épreuves, dont les 24 h du Nürburgring.
On a alors le privilège de parcourir à vélo des endroits qui font partie de la légende du sport automobile, ce qui donne tout le temps de les admirer :-) En particulier, 500 m après le début de cette montée, l'endroit où Niki Lauda a eu son terrible accident en 1976, et aux environs du 4e km, le fameux virage incliné du Carrousel (Karussell).
Cette longue côte fait souffrir les moteurs de voitures en temps normal, mais lors lors du Rad am Ring elle fait encore plus mal aux cyclistes participants, particulièrement sur ses dernières centaines de mètres, au lieu-dit « Hohe Acht » (en raison du sommet de l'Eifel éponyme, non loin), particulièrement pentus, jusqu'à 17％. Il y a toujours à cet endroit des cyclistes devenus piétons !
