At the 2015 Rad am Ring, I had the privilege of cycling (for the first and last time) along the aptly-named 'Steilstrecke' (steep path), which was open to participants in the 'Touristenfahren', a race open to cycle tourists on the Sunday of the event.

I had a 26/34 as my smallest gear, and I would have preferred even smaller! I managed not to put my foot down, but I didn't want to. This slope hurts even more because it's in a straight line, you can't see the end of it until you're there and it's at the very end of the climb, which is already tough.

The surface is very unusual, with horizontally striated concrete slabs. Perhaps to reduce the risk of skidding?

It should be noted that the Steilstrecke was closed to participants in the Rad am Ring in editions subsequent to 2015, and that it is generally inaccessible from the circuit throughout the year, except for very special events. It should still be possible to use it in normal times (by mountain bike or gravel bike), but independently of the circuit. But opportunities to cycle it from the Nordschleife must have become very rare, if they still exist at all.
