Quite a tough climb though. Steep gradients at the bottom for 2 kilometres, then a little rest and it gets steeper again. Then half the climb is over and so are the hardest gradients. The second part is easier I think. The road is sometimes average for the first half, but then there are some great sections. New macadam at times. This is a climb not to be underestimated as there are few rest points and it can be very hot in summer with the sun beating down hard and early. Even in May, expect to ... read more

After Grand-Naves, you can continue as far as the cross-country skiing hostel, but the road there is often broken, so it's not pleasant, plus there are some very steep gradients (11-12%). But if you want to pass the 1,000 metres of ascent from Grand-Coeur, now's your chance!

Wide road, impeccable tarmac at the beginning, average in the middle and atrocious on the final part between Naves and Grand Naves, the descent was not a pleasure.
The climb should be done in the morning in hot weather as it is south facing and there is not much shade.
The ascent to the village of Grand Naves via Petit-Coeur located in the Tarentaise valley a few miles from Moutiers and Albertville allows a beautiful ascent away from the traffic of the big passes.
The climb is very regular and the most severe percentages are during the first kilometres with a passage at 14% on a short one.
At the start of the spa of La Léchère cross the Isère then pass behind the UCAR factory, then turn right under the expressway, direction Petit-coeur, the slope starts straight away, not very steep, cross the village along the torrent, at the exit turn completely left.
This is the start of the real climb, initially in the woods and then very quickly in the open, the views of the neighbouring mountains and the valley are magnificent.
About ten kilometres further up, you pass through the small village of Naves, continue for about 2 kilometres before the end.
Arrive at Grand-Naves, numerous fountains, café-restaurant, public toilets (clean), picnic tables.
After the village the climb continues for about 4Kms to the parking area for the cross-country ski runs.
There is also a way to switch to the direction of Aigueblanche via Villargerel, which I strongly advise against because of the state of the road for several kilometres, so it is better to go back down the road that has been climbed, even if it is not great either.
Have a good ride and be careful on the way down.
