The traditional climb to the Santuario del Acebo was a protagonist stage since the 90s for many years in the Vuelta a Asturias, until in 2019 it was included in the route of the Vuelta a España, with a decisive route for the general classification that finished off the climb of three other previous passes.
The climb has up to seven road slopes that link up with this main one or climb up the opposite side. At the exit of Cangas del Narcea, the so-called "traditional ascent" is duly signposted.
El Acebo is a tough pass with three clearly differentiated parts. The first up to kilometre 3, where there are ramps of up to 15%. After a short break we find the central part, with 2 demanding kilometres. And after that, in a new detour, the final part with the hardest ramps which, without a doubt, being open, is the most spectacular part... and even harder without wind.
