The climb starts at a dead end on the coast, so you have to descend the same road before you can climb again. However, this extra loop is definitely worth it.
For convenience, I will start my description from the top of the climb, i.e. when you descend it.
In picturesque Varengeville-sur-Mer, you turn into a narrow and not clearly indicated side street. The first part of the journey takes you between the trees and typical Normandy half-timbered houses. Then the descent (or climb depending on the direction) really begins when you arrive at the horse meadows. In the summer, it is beautiful cycling in the green. Towards the foot of the climb you will pass a small parking lot, but you will not see many cars here. It is not a nice beach, but mainly a viewpoint.
After the parking place, you are really in the Gorge du Petit Ailly. Between impressive limestone plateau's you cycle to the viewpoint. With good weather, you have a fantastic panorama here.
The climb itself is doable, although your legs may have cooled off because you want to enjoy the view. However, you will have to climb again immediately.
De klim start aan een doodlopende weg aan de kust, daarom moet je deze klim eerst via dezelfde weg afdalen alvorens je deze weer kan beklimmen. Dit extra lusje is echter absoluut de moeite waard.
Ik begin mijn beschrijving voor het gemak vanaf de top van de klim, dus wanneer je hem afdaalt.
Je slaat in het pittoreske Varengeville-sur-Mer een smal en onduidelijk aangegeven zijstraatje in. Je rijdt het eerste stukje nog even tussen de bomen en typisch Normandische vakwerkhuisjes door. Vervolgens begint de afdaling (of klim afhankelijk van de richting) echt zodra je bij de paardenweides aankomt. 's Zomers is het hier prachtig fietsen in het groen. Richting de voet van de klim passeer je een klein parkeerplaatje, maar veel auto's zal je hier niet tegenkomen. Het is geen namelijk geen lekker ligstrand, maar vooral een uitzichtpunt.
Na de parkeerplaats bevindt je echt in de Gorge du Petit Ailly. Tussen indrukwekkende kalksteenplateau's fiets je naar het uitzichtpunt. Met mooi weer heb je hier een fantastisch panorama.
De klim zelf is goed te doen, alhoewel je benen wellicht wat afgekoeld zijn omdat je natuurlijk wel even van het uitzicht wilt genieten. Je zal echter weer direct moeten gaan klimmen.
