On my monster ride (315km) from León to Santiago de Compostella climbed up around 7am 'in the morning. Wonderful how the misty landscape opens up and you climb up here in complete silence. The climb is otherwise not difficult, but the silence and beautiful nature are absolutely worth it. A nice descent follows towards Ponferrada. Only in the village of El Acebo do we hit the brakes. This is a camino village full of inns, where everything has been done to slow down. Narrow streets, cobblestones with a gutter etc. Once out of the village you can let go again.

I did this climb on my way to Compostela. From Astorga you first get a steep descent and from then on it goes up and down until Rabanal del camino. From this village you get a fairly steady climb to Foncebadon. This village was abandoned for a long time but because of the recent camino culture it has been artificially revived with a pilgrim hostel. For the rest there's not much to do. For hikers it's a possible stop before crossing the col. The cyclists prefer to go straight through Ponferrada. After this you'll reach the top immediately, a short descent and then a short climb to the pilgrims cross. Then awaits a descent where you may encounter a pebble, so pay attention!
As for the surroundings: wonderfully abandoned and beautiful nature. Except for the pilgrims you won't see a cat here. On top of the summit we had a nice view on the cloud cover above Ponferrada (see pictures's).
