A rolling pass that's quite pleasant to climb. No steep gradients. Several steles in honour of Spanish champions are placed on the outside of certain hairpins. Most of the road is under trees, but there are some pleasant views over the top of the pass. There is some traffic.

Very nice mountain pass. Fairly good asphalt. It is usually very busy with cars and cyclists.

Puerto de montaña muy bonito. Asfalto bastante bueno.

After Superbagnere and the French side, the gate from Bossost is a late day pass. Not very difficult, nor very long, the road is under construction at the end with traffic lights that allow alternating traffic. The summit is not worthy of interest. The road is not in great condition. If you do it,
It's mainly for the stages of the tour...

From Bossost, a lively town along the Garona river, I cycled up the Spanish side of this literally cross-border Col du Portillon.
Nice wide good road climbs without extreme percentages against the open valley flank via 4 apart hairpin bends with beautiful panoramic views on theVal d'Aran. Small plaques and a monument in curves scattered over the climb remind of the Spanish Tour winners (Bahamontes/Indurain/Contador/Sastre...).
Second half of the climb with one last hairpin turn winds more into the forest. You also pass the summery busy Aran zoo, which was noticeable by the parked cars along the route.
The summit is in a forest with only a picnic area and a remainder of the border post between Spain and France. So it is better to get your supplies at the start.
Along this side of the climb, contrary to the French side, the cycling information boards are present every kilometre to inform you about the distance to the top / the altitude / and the average gradient that awaits you.

Nice nice climb without extremes, which is also regularly on the program in the Tour.

Indeed a nice col to ride. I'm not a great descender, so I almost made a mistake on the way back to Luchon. Fortunately a cyclist came from the other side and no car. But a nice col to enjoy quietly.

What it says is absolutely right. The road is beautiful and I would love to do the descent on this side again to go down really fast. Nice surroundings too, it smells like forest. There are regular signs with the remaining climbing meters for some mental support. I had it as the 2nd col that day so it took a lot of effort. All in all, a must do!
