Best avoided on hot days, as you will ride in a wide-open landscape most of the time, which means the sun on your body.
Jaw-dropping views along the way and a restaurant (Chez Gaston) at the summit, where the view is overwhelming. Everybody seems to be looking for views of the Mont Blanc in this area 😎 Tough climb, but tackle it if you're in the area.

Col du Joly (cycled June 2023) must fall short of the Cormet de Roselend in terms of cycling fame in that region.
Via the latter, you leave Beaufort to turn sharply left (D70) fairly soon and climb out of the town via some tough hairpin turns. On the open valley flank, the route continues with gentle curves gently ascending towards picturesque Hauteluce. Just before it, you leave the road on the right (signpost Col du Joly/St.Sauveur/Les Granges) to continue cycling slightly up and down with hardly any traffic between the alpine meadows to the Belleville hydroelectric power station.
Here, after the long gentle run-up, 10 km of real climbing starts.
A narrow road in bumpy asphalt leads uphill with a whole series of hairpin bends. There is hardly any habitation but there are regularly ringing cows as spectators. Towards the end, it gets slightly steeper and windy on the barren mountainside in the panoramic 360° nature frame.
The summit was somewhat sobering. A fantastic view of the Mont Blanc massif, but marred by lots of ski infrastructure and works with excavators on the summer-abandoned large car park .
There was a large closed mountain hut for supplies (open in summers?).
Practical:
From Belleville, green and white cycling info signs (distance to summit / % next km / altitude) every kilometre.
Be careful with the indicated kilometre average as it is misleading as there is a very large variation within that distance (e.g. 5% 12% 8% 18% at 1000m) This also does not benefit your climbing rhythm.

Joly/Jolie in French means beautiful - nice - handsome.
This long col with nice run-up to solid final climb in mountain nature certainly didn't steal its name!
