A steady climb, often in the shade, to Theys, then a more sustained climb in the sunshine to the pass. Nice views of the Chartreuse and Grésivaudan, as well as Belledonne. There can be quite a lot of traffic on the road, especially on the way home from work. The tarmac is generally OK. The pass is 10km at 7% not 11.2km at 6.3%.

The start is relatively easy, but the going gets tougher as soon as you enter the picturesque village of Theys. The slope will remain steep until the edge of the Ayes pass, while slowly and progressively decreasing.

Nice views on the way up... mainly towards the back. It is possible to continue to the ski resort of Prapoutel or Pipay (the junction is a bit higher), or to Prabert and the small col du Lautaret (nothing to do with the big col of the same name).

The part between Theys and the col des Ayes is very exposed to the sun; take this into account in case of strong heat. Note that there is a certified drinking water source at the pass.

On the way down, it's very fast up to Theys and you have to be careful, for this reason, and even more so in case of gravel (as recently).
