Superb climb, much more interesting than from the bedroom where there is a lot of traffic, this road is not very busy but quite demanding with beautiful views, preferable if you have to climb to the Madeleine by the south side.
Superbe montée, bien plus intéressante que depuis la chambre où il y a énormément de circulation, cette route est très peu fréquentée mais assez exigeante avec de très beau panorama, à préférer si on doit monter à la madeleine par le versant sud

Am doing it now, three km to the top. WHAT a beautiful climb! Little traffic, beautiful views and fine asphalt.
Ben er nu mee bezig, nog drie km tot de top. Wát een prachtige klim! Weinig verkeer, prachtige vergezichten en fijn asfalt.

When taking this from La Chambre via Montgellafrey the road on the Montgellafrey is ok but with long stretches that have a lot of fine grit on the asphalt. There's one small section with the right side of the road collapsed, narrow road. But this section was extremely quite, barely encountered any cars or motorcycles.
Once at the ski station where you join the 'route du col de la madeleine' the road is much wider and cleaner.
The Montgellafrey when descending is to be taken with caution !!! due to all the grit on the road.
In reality the maximum slope is 17％ on a short portion, not helped by a surface that suffered this winter, I am housed in the kilometre 4 and for the blow, the slope overhangs the chalet, To descend very carefully (I did it downhill), Otherwise it's calm and it calms a blow, word of mountain man (I am from the country of Volcanoes).

Very special climb that knows no stopping. Don't expect any alternating parts where you can get to: it is a continuous climb. My experience was not too good, because this was the final climb of the day with a hunger pangs at the last minute after Col de la Croix-de-Fer and a long detour.
Hele bijzondere klim die van geen ophouden weet. Verwacht geen afwisselende stukken waar je bij kan komen: het is aan één stuk door klimmen. Mijn ervaring was niet al te best, want dit was de afsluitende klim van de dag met een hongerklop op de valreep na Col de la Croix-de-Fer en een flink stuk omfietsen.
In June 2021 I chose the most difficult version of the Madeleine, the one starting from Montgellafrey. After having climbed first Lacets de Montvernier and then Col de Chaussy, this Madeleine was one big calvary. With a temperature above 30 degrees and hardly any shade on the flanks, the climb was a piece of cake. The steep pentagons follow each other in quick succession. Rarely have I been so happy to reach the top.
In juni 2021 gekozen voor de meest lastige variant van de Madeleine, namelijk diegene vanuit Montgellafrey. Na eerst Lacets de Montvernier en vervolgens Col de Chaussy opgereden te hebben, was deze Madeleine één grote calvarietocht. Met een temperatuur boven de 30 graden en nagenoeg geen schaduw op de flanken liep de beklimming voor geen meter. De steile pentes blijven naar mijn gevoel elkaar in sneltempo opvolgen. Zelden zo blij geweest de top te bereiken.

A long climb where you just need to get into a rhythm and and crack on. pretty steady, and pleasant roads, but not what I'd call a stunning climb. Great views towards the top though, where it is more exposed, and a little cafe at the top for a hot chocolate - it was pretty dam cold when i went up!
Fantastic descent on the other side as i rode towards Albertville. Quiet road and just stunning. One of the best descents i've done.
Very tight climb where you can hold a nice pace from beginning to end but there are nicer mountains in the area

Zeer strakke klim waar je een mooi tempo kan vasthouden van begin tot einde maar er zijn mooiere bergen in de omstreek

Lots of tourists but the road up is not very busy. So it is pleasant to cycle up, if you do not suffer from back pain as I did. Not an easy climb but beautiful.
Veel toeristen maar toch is de weg bergop niet erg druk bereden. Aangenaam dus om naar boven te fietsen, als je ten minste geen last hebt van rugpijn zoals dit bij mij het geval was. Geen gemakkelijke beklimming maar wel mooi.
A beautiful climb. I did it via the D 213. The roads are good. Much less traffic than for example the Telegraph/Galibier. In my opinion, this col is very doable. The qualification 'No. 2' of France, I can not quite place. Possibly because you almost always climb? (The col d'Isolan is in my opinion more of a col that should be high on the list). Anyway: the Col de la Madeleine is a f a n t a s t i c a l climb!
Een prachtige klim. Ik heb die via de D 213 gedaan. De wegen zijn goed. Veel minder verkeer dan bijvoorbeeld de Telegraph/ Galibier. Wat mij betreft is deze col zeer goed te doen. De kwalificatie 'nr 2' van Frankrijk kan ik niet goed plaatsen. Mogelijk omdat je bijna altijd klimt? (De col d'Isolan is in mijn ogen meer een col die zo hoog op de lijst mag staan). Hoe dan ook: de Col de la Madeleine is een f a n t a s t i s c h e klim!
On the first day of a three-day cycling trip, we did the Lacets de Montvernier, the Chaussy and the Madeleine. These were also my first kilometres in high mountains, a category 2 mountain was the toughest I have done so far.
It's a busy road for quite a long time, but from the ski village onwards, it gets a bit quieter. I had continuous tension on my legs and cramped for the first time 3 km before the summit. Nevertheless, I did manage to make it to the top and had a nice sit on the terrace there before the descent started again. The start might be a bit boring and that doesn't help when you are toiling hard, because you have a little less distraction from the beautiful scenery. In that respect, the Glandon might be prettier. But for me a nice experience and a must if you are cycling in this area.
Op de eerste dag van een fiets driedaagse hebben we de Lacets de Montvernier, de Chaussy en de Madeleine gedaan. Het waren tevens mijn eerste kilometers in het hooggebergte, een categorie 2 berg was het zwaarste wat ik tot nu gedaan heb.
Het is vrij lang een drukke weg, maar vanaf het skidorp wordt het wat rustiger. Ik had continu spanning op de benen en kreeg 3 km voor de top voor het eerst kramp. Desondanks wel de top kunnen halen en daar lekker op het terras gezeten voor de afdaling weer begon. Het begin is misschien wat saai en dat helpt niet als je flink aan het zwoegen bent, omdat je iets minder afleiding hebt van de mooie natuur. Wat dat betreft is de Glandon misschien mooier. Maar voor mij een mooie ervaring en een must als je in deze omgeving aan het fietsen bent.
I really didn't find the Madeleine that special. It was tough, but wasn't really beautiful until the last 4 km. Lots of cars, big roads and nothing special. If you have to choose, I would rather go for the Galibier, the Croix de Fer or La Chaussey.
Ik vond de Madeleine echt niet zo speciaal. Hij was lastig, maar was tot de laatste 4 km niet echt mooi. Veel auto's, grote wegen en weinig speciaals. Als je moet kiezen zou ik eerder voor de Galibier, De Croix de Fer of La Chaussey gaan.

If you drive the climb referred to here, you will hardly encounter any traffic in the 14km to Saint Francois Longchamp.

Today I had my hazing with regards to cycling alpine cols. Until today I'd only 'climbed' in the hills of Limburg and the Belgian Ardennes. I was looking forward to it but in the end it wasn't that bad. Buffeting in the morning sun and enjoying the stunning views during the climb. Stopping now and then at a water point to fill your water bottle. This climb is definitely worth repeating.
Vandaag mijn ontgroening gehad m.b.t. het fietsen van alpen cols. Tot vandaag alleen in de Limburgse heuvels en Belgische Ardennen 'geklommen'. Zag er wel tegenop maar viel uiteindelijk reuze mee. Lekker buffelen in de ochtendzon en genieten van de waanzinnig mooie uitzichten tijdens de klim. Af en toe stoppen bij een waterpunt om je bidon te vullen. Deze beklimming is zeker voor herhaling vatbaar.
Is really very heavy climb! You do not get a moment to recover, continuously between 7 and 10%.
