From this side, the pass is often shadier and more sheltered, making it more enjoyable in summer. The gradient is fairly irregular in places, with even a small flat area on the second part of the ascent after the village of St Julien du Gua (be careful, though, as there are some very steep gradients through and out of this village). As always in the Ardèche, the road is in very good condition, with very little traffic. A cyclist's paradise.
